FROSTBURG, Md. – Glenville State held off a pesky Frostburg State squad Wednesday night, winning a workmanlike 90-72 victory on the road in Mountain East Conference Women's Basketball action. With the win, the Lady Pioneers remain unbeaten.
Coach Kim Stephens squad faced a Frostburg team that battled throughout, and handled the GSC pressure defense better than anyone over the past two weeks. GSC utilized a pair of critical runs to gain separation, and secure the victory.
In a tight first quarter, Frostburg held a lead late in the stanza at 17-15, but GSC pushed forward a 12-5 surge in the final two minutes, highlighted by a buzzer-beating three from Re'Shawna Stone. This provided GSC a 27-22 lead at the quarter break.
Glenville opened the second quarter with an 18-7 run, that increased the advantage to 45-29. The lead was 47-33 at halftime. Frostburg battled back in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to seven at 54-47, then six at 56-50. Stephens called a timeout, and the Lady Pioneers moved back on track, re-establishing a double-figure lead by the end of the third quarter at 71-59.
In the final frame, the Glenville defense tightened, holding the Bobcats to only 13 points. GSC's largest lead came in the final minute at 90-69.
Stone led the GSC attack, producing a line of 26 points, six rebounds, and five assists. She connected on four three-pointers on the evening. She was complemented by Dazha Congleton with 23 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Vendela Danielsson was the other GSC player in double figures with 12 points. Congleton, Danielsson and Aline Fevrier all collected three steals, leading a defense that forced 23 Frostburg turnovers.
GSC was 35-of-82 from the field (42.7%), including a 12-of-29 night from beyond the arc (41.4%).
Frostburg was led by Rhiana Hall with 19 points, and Samiya Esema with 15. The Bobcats were 30-of-66 from the field (45.5%).
Glenville improves to 8-0 overall, and a 4-0 in the Mountain East Conference. Frostburg falls to 2-7 overall, and 1-4 in the MEC.
The Lady Pioneers return home next Monday, hosting Fairmont at 12:00 noon.
