GSC Volleyball Picks up First Set Victory But Not Enough Over WVWC

Glenville, W.Va. - Pioneer Volleyball (2-0) falls in double-header against West Virginia Wesleyan College (5-2) after first week back from schedule pause. 

Game 1| 3-0 (25-14), (25-19), (25-20)
Game 2| 3-1 (25-23), (25-18), (25-15), (25-18)

How it Happened 

Game One 

Set One: 

The Lady Pioneers started off with a battle against the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan College. The Bobcats scored the first point on the night but then the Lady Pioneers answered back with a point on their end. The Lady Pioneers ended set one by racking up fourteen points but was not enough to outscore the twenty-five points scored by the Bobcats. The Lady Pioneers ended set one with three kills. 

Set Two: 

WVWC began set two with a kill by Lauryn Antolock from Payton Hefner, giving the Bobcats the first point of set two. Then due to a service error by WVWC's Emily Doyle, would give the Lady Pioneers their first point of the set. The Bobcats would then go on a 4-0 run before the Blue and White could answer back with a Kill from Jyra Clark-Casto making the score 2-8. Then by two more points by the Lady Pioneers would pull them closer to the Bobcats, as they still trailed 4-8, before the Bobcats answered back with a kill, giving them, another point. The two would continue to battle before the Lady Pioneers tied with the Bobcats 14-14 in the set. However, the Bobcats would pull away from the tie, ending set two with twenty-five points, as Glenville was only able to score nineteen. 

Set Three: 

The Bobcats began the third set of the first game with a point, but the Blue and White would quickly answer back with a 3-0 drive giving GSC their first lead of the night. Both the Bobcats and the Lady Pioneers would battle for the tie until a kill by Karlei Shaver would put GSC ahead 9-8. The Blue and White would then go on a 5-0 run, putting them at 13-8 over the Bobcats before WVWC could even answer back. The Lady Pioneers would fight hard with the Bobcats through the entire set but fell short at the end as the Bobcats claimed the third set and the game, 20-25. 

Game Two 

Set One: 

WVWC scored the first point in the game, but GSC was quick to answer back. The two would battle it out util they were tied again at 16, but WVWC broke the tie with a kill by Lauryn Antolock from Maddi Carpenter, taking them to 17-16. However, GSC would answer back again with a 4-0 run taking the Blue and White to 20-17 over the Bobcats. The Lady Pioneers would ride their high energy wave to the end of the set, taking it over the Bobcats, 25-23. 

Set Two: 

GSC came in strong with a 2-0 run to start the set, but WVWC would answer back with a point. Then a kill by Skyler Mace would add to the 3-1 Lady Pioneer lead. The two fought a tough battle through the set, but WVWC came out strong, taking the set 25-18 over GSC. 

Set Three: 

The Bobcats came out strong going on a 4-0 run to begin the set, but the Lady Pioneers answered back. However, WVWC would answer back stronger with a 6-0 run, taking the score to 2-10. But this did not stop the Blue and White from answering back as they went on a 4-0 run, taking the score to 6-11. Both teams had a great competition between one another, however the Bobcats would go on a 5-0 run to end the set as they took set three, 25-15. 

Set Four: 

The Lady Pioneers had an excellent 2-0 run to begin the final set of the night with a kill by Skyler Mace, and a Service Ace by Sarah Grainger. Glenville State put up a tough fight through the set against Wesleyan, with kills by Taylor Goett, Skyler Mace, and Karlei Shaver. However, the Lady Pioneers would fall short to the Bobcats 25-18. 

Inside the Box Score 

Karlei Shaver led the Lady Pioneers in Kills with 9 in Game One, followed by Skyler Mace with 6. Shaver also led the team in Digs with 11 in Game One, followed by Jenna Cogar with 9, and Kylie Williams with 7. In Game One, Sarah Grainger led the team in Assists with 9, followed by Jenna Cogar with 6, and Sophie Shifferly with 2. 

In the second game, Skyler Mace led the team with 13 digs, followed by Karlei Shaver with 10, followed by Sarah Mazzaferro with 9. Karlei Shaver led the team in Digs in Game Two with 14, followed by Sarah Grainger with 10, and Lindsay Winkler with 9. Jenna Cogar led the team in Assists in Game Two with a total of 13, followed by Sarah Grainger with 11, and Sophie Shifferly with 9. 

Coming Up

The Lady Pioneers are set to face West Virginia State on Feburary 24, 2021 inside the realms of the Waco Center at 7:00 p.m.
