Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers (0-4) drop Senior Night, Home Opener to the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State (6-1) in three sets; (25-9), (29-27), (25-12).
Karlei Shaver tallied eight kills on the night with 11 digs while totaling 30 attacks in the evening.
How It Happened
Set One:
The Blue and White held a close match against the Yellow Jackets early in the set trailing just 9-7 with kills by
Karlei Shaver, Sarah Grainger and
Jyra Clark-Casto. However, the Pioneers could not hold on as WVSU then entered an 11-0 run to lead 20-7.
Rachel LeRose then tallied the final kill in the set from Grainger falling 25-9.
Set Two:
West Virginia State came into the second set of night strong off their victory of the first. However, the Lady Pioneers would answer back with a 2-0 run to put them up 2-1. The two teams would give one another tight competition through the set, and it would come down to the very end. Both teams tied at 25, but a kill by
Karlei Shaver would put the Lady Pioneers ahead by one, but WV State answered back. However, this did not stop the Blue and White. A kill by
Hannah McKown from
Sophie Shifferly would cause GSC to tie again at 27 with the Yellowjackets. Unfortunately, WV State answered back with a 2-0 run, taking the set over GSC.
Set Three:
Using the same momentum in the second set
Jenna Cogar quickly scored a service ace followed by a kill from Mace trailing just 6-5 in the third. The Yellow Jackets would then pull away 11-5 where
Sarah Mazzaferro added two kills to trail 14-9. The Yellow Jackets then continued to accumulate to their score as they lead 21-10 while adding two ball handling errors to the Pioneer score. WVSU then took the third and final set 25-12.

Team tallies on the night for GSC included a total of 23 kills, 98 total attacks, with a .051 hitting percentage.
On the night, Sophomore
Karlei Shaver led the team in kills with 8, followed by
Sarah Mazzaferro with 5, and Skyler Mace with 4. In assists,
Sophie Shifferly led the team with 12, followed by
Jenna Cogar with 7, and Sarah Grainger with 2.
Kylie Williams led the team in digs on the night with 17,
