Pioneer Volleyball Falls to Golden Eagles

Glenville, W.Va.- The Pioneer volleyball team (0-8) falls against the Golden Eagles of The University of Charleston (5-4) in a Tuesday evening double-header.

How it Happened 
 
Game One 
 
Set One: 
 
The evening would begin by an immediate kill by UC's Mackenzy Johnson to give the Golden Eagles their first point of the set. However, Glenville State's Hannah McKown would answer back for the Pioneers with a kill as well. But the Golden Eagles would go on a 4-0 run to answer back, taking the score to (6-2) for the set. The Pioneers would try to answer back and power through the set, but unfortunately fell short at the end of set one, (25-14). 
 
Set Two: 
 
Glenville State would enter the next set of the first game by scoring off a block by Jyra Clark-Casto and Sarah Grainger. Then, a kill by UC would be their way of starting their 3-0 run to answer back. Both teams would go back-to-back with each other through the set and it would come down to the end. Both teams tied at 24, and the Blue and White would break away from the tie, scoring, with a kill by Skylar Mace, taking them to (25-24) over the Golden Eagles. Then an error by UC would give the Pioneers their next point, as Glenville State would take set two, (26-24). 
 
Set Three: 
 
Starting out in set three, UC would get the first point. However, a kill by Karlei Shaver would give the Pioneers the next point of the night. But then a 5-0 run by UC would be their answer to the Pioneers.  But this didn't stop the Pioneers, as they would answer back with a 4-0 run, taking the score to (7-6), as the Pioneers would trail by just one. The Blue and White would try to pull ahead, but a late 8-0 by UC would pull them ahead of the Pioneers, taking the score to (20-11). The Pioneers would try to battle back, but it was not enough, as they fell (25-13) to UC in set three. 
 
Set Four:
 
Set four would begin with a point going to the Pioneers by an error caused by UC. The Pioneers would however pull away from the Golden Eagles in a few runs, almost pulling away taking the set. Unfortunately, a late 5-0 run by UC would give the Golden Eagles the set, and the game, as they took the set (25-23). 
Game Two 
 
Set One:
 
The Golden Eagles would enter game two strong, going on a 3-0 run. But then a kill by Skylar Mace would put the Pioneers on the board.  Both teams would have a tough battle with one another through the set, however the Golden Eagles would take the set with a late 4-0 run at the end, winning set one (25-16). 
 
Set Two:
 
The Pioneers would begin the second set of game two by scoring off of three errors by the Golden Eagles.  The Pioneers would hold a close lead back and forth with the Golden Eagles through the entire set, but unfortunately fell short at the end, as UC would take the second set, (25-23). 
 
Set Three:
 
In the final set of the night, both teams would perform very well.  The Pioneers would have a few runs, but it was not enough as the Golden Eagles also took the final set of the night, and game two, (25-22).  
 
Inside the Box Score 
 
On the night for the Pioneers, they would end with a combined 60 kills. Karlei Shaver led the night in kills from both games combined with 15, followed by Skylar Mace and Sarah Mazzaferro both ending the night with 14 each.  In digs on the night for the Pioneers, they would end the evening with 100. Kylie Williams contributed a total of 30 digs, with Karlei Shaver contributing with 22, and Sarah Grainger contributing with 17. 
 
Coming Up
 
Pioneer Volleyball will travel to Athens, West Virginia on Friday, March 5, 2021 to take on the Concord Mountain Lions for a double-header, as it is their final regular season matchup.  They are set to play at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.
