Glenville, W.Va. – After being shutout in game one 11-4, GSC Baseball rallied back to defeat West Liberty in game two of their MEC Conference opener, 11-0.
Having a day,
Duane Englund led the Pioneers in their offensive attack as he hit 4-for-7 scoring three runs and four RBIs including a homerun and two doubles.
How It Happened
Game One:
In the first, the Hilltoppers gained a quick 3-0 lead over the Pioneers. Looking to respond back, GSC would have both Mathew Mangum and
John Peloro both standing in scoring position but left stranded.
Then gaining a 5-0 lead, the Pioneers needed to swipe a run. Mangum opened the bottom of the third with a double to left as Peloro grounded out to second moving Magnum to third.
Tyler Phillips then single to right scoring Mathew holding the Pioneers 5-1.
In the fourth the Hilltoppers added 5 runs off a homerun and grand slam to put the Pioneers down 10-1.
Duane Englund then hit a top shop homerun over the left field wall to bring the Pioneers 10-2.
WLU again added another run in the sixth to extend their advantage 11-2.
In the seventh, Collin Gross drew a walk and scored off Devonte Rose's double to left center.
Fabian Escalante then grounded out to second moving Rose to third. Mangum then drew a walk as Peloro hit a double center scoring Rose.
However, the Pioneers would fall 11-4 with
Adam Riggleman picking up loss on the mound. Christopher Thompon pitched 3.2 innings giving up just one run and two walks.
Game Two:
John Peloro opened the first inning with a single to left as Englund then doubled down the left field line. From there,
Tre'von Smith singled to right scoring Peloro putting the Pioneers on the board first. Zack Morris then hit an RBI singled finishing the first 2-0.
Then in the second,
Fabian Escalante singled to left as Mangum drew a walk behind. From there
Duane Englund would hit a double shot to left to score both runners extending their lead 4-0.
Esalante opened the fourth with a triple past center then scoring on a wild pitch. Mangum then drew another walk as
John Peloro then went deep to put the Pioneers up seven.
In the sixth, Escalante singled to right scoring off of Englund's single to center.
Tre'von Smith then doubled to left as Zack Morris then doubled short to left scoring both. Continuing the streak,
Shane Talvacchio then forced a West Lib throwing error scoring Morris to put the Pioneers ahead 11-0.
Jesse Weathers picked up his first win on the mound sitting six Hilltoppers giving uo just five hits.
Inside The Box Score
GSC tallied 18 hits on the day including ten extra base hits with seven doubles, one triple and two homeruns.
John Peloro tallied three hits on the day including a double and homerun cashing three RBIs.
Fabian Escalante hit 3-for-4 while scoring three runs.
Tre'von Smith and Mathew Mangum each tallied two hits counting a double each with Devonte Rose and and Zack Morris who additionally hit doubles.
West Liberty picked up 20 hits in the double header and was led Kaden Blomquist tallying four hits.
