Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer Baseball (12-7, 8-6) team completed a two game sweep of the Davis & Elkins Senators (4-10, 4-10 MEC) on day one of their four game series this weekend.

How It Happened

Game One:
Â
Davis & Elkins would strike first early in the game scoring four runs. D&E's Christian Ortega hit a two RBI single to left scoring John Arcaro and Alex Castaneda. Then later in the same inning, Najay King smacked a two RBI double down the right field line as Ortega and Cole Hitch both crossed the plate as they led, 4-0.

Glenville State bounced back in the second as
Ryan Rodriguez hit a two RBI single up the middle scoring Mathew Mangum and
Tyler Phillips. Then
Zach Morris advanced to second on a passed ball with
Colby Werry advancing to third and
Ryan Rodriguez scoring as the Pioneers trailed, 4-3.

The Pioneers tied the contest up at 4-4 in the third when
Spencer Blackburn singled through the left side scoring
Shane Talvacchio.

Glenville State then captured the lead in the fourth.
Duane Englund homered to left field scoring
Tre'von Smith,
Zach Morris, and
Colby Werry as they Pioneers led, 8-4.

Ryan Rodriguez then hit a solo homer to left center as GSC now held a 9-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth. However, GSC wasn't done in the fifth as

Zach Morris and
Colby Werry as they took a 12-4 lead. Mathew Mangum gave GSC one more run in the fifth scoring
Tyler Phillips off of a triple to center field as the Pioneers held a 13-4 hold over the Senators.

Davis & Elkins added three runs in the seventh but the Pioneers went on and claimed game one, 13-7.

Colby Werry went 3-for-4 with
Tre'von Smith going 2-for-4 with three RBI's. Duane Enguland went 1-for-4 but had four RBI's and
Ryan Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with three RBI's.

Adam Riggleman picked up his third win on the mound. He pitched 5.0 innings allowing three hits, four runs, with three strike outs.

Game Two:

The Senators started game two much as they did in game one as they struck first in the first inning scoring two runs to take a 2-0 lead.

Glenville State answered back in the bottom of the first when
Colby Werry scored on a wild pitch. Then
Tyler Phillips singled to right scoring
Tre'von Smith and
Zach Morris as GSC now led 3-2. But then in the same inning, Shane Talvasshio singled to left as
Duane Englund crossed the plate putting GSC up 4-2.
Davis & Elkins pulled within one run in the third when Cole Hitch homered to center field making it, 4-3.

But the Pioneers would continue their hot bats in the bottom of the third as Mathew Mangum homered to left center scoring
Shane Talvacchio making it 6-3. Then
Colby Werry singled to left scoring
Spencer Blackburn as they now led 7-3. And GSC was just getting started in the third.

Zach Morris singled to right, scoring
Ryan Rodriguez. Then
Tre'von Smith launched a ball over the right field fence scoring
Zach Morris and
Colby Werry.
Duane Englund then homered to left field as the Pioneers now led 12-3. GSC would get one more score in the third when Mathew Mangum hit a sac fly to left scoring
Tyler Phillips as the Pioneers held a 13-3 lead. All in all GSC scored seven runs in the third inning.

Glenville State added another run in the fourth making it 14-3.

The Senators added one run in the fifth but GSC added a run in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the bottom of the sixth as they went on to take game two, 17-6.

Zach Morris went 3-for-3 and had an RBI.
Tre'von Smith went 1-for-3 with three RBI's while
Fabian Escalante went 1-for-1 with a two run home run.

Tyler Phillips finished game two going 3-for-4 with two RBI's and Mathew Mangum went 1-for-3 with three RBI's

Joseph Rubalcaba earned the victory on the mound pitching 6.0 innings, giving up seven hits, four runs, with three strike outs.

The Pioneers tallied 31 total hits in the two contests while the Senators had 15 hits.

Tre'von Smith went 3-for-7 with six RBI's in the two games with
Duane Englund going 2-for-7 with five RBI's.

Glenville State will return to the diamond tomorrow (Sunday, April 11) as they will play game three and game four against Davis & Elkins at the Sue Morris Sports Complex. Game three is slated for 1pm.
