Pioneer Finish Senators Taking Three from D&E

Glenville, W.Va. – After a tragic game one, Glenville State (13-8, 9-7 MEC) would prevail in game two as they would take three-of-the-four games from Davis & Elkins College (5-11).

How It Happened

Game One:

The Pioneers would break the scoreless game in the bottom of the second inning as Duane Englund started the inning with a leadoff double to left field. Then at the next at Tyler Phillips would bring Englund home on a base hit just past the second baseman as GSC led, 1-0.

The Pioneers added another run in when Spencer Blackburn hit a field choice to second but then a throwing error by the Senators would see Tyler Phillips cross the plate. Then Colby Werry's single to center scored Blackburn as GSC held a 3-0 lead heading into the third.

Jesse Weathers on the mound would hold D&E scoreless until the top of the fourth. The Senators however, would get on the scoreboard in the fourth inning while also taking their first lead of the game at 13-3 as they tallied 11 hits in the inning.

Glenville State added one run in the fifth as the Senators committed an error on a Tre'von Smith hit which scored Ryan Rodriguez as they trailed 13-4.

Ryan Rodriguez added another run for GSC in the bottom of the sixth inning after some great base running by Ryker Rivera as he crossed the plate making it 13-5. And then later in the same inning Colby Werry would help Spencer Blackburn cross the plate on a fielder's choice but the Pioneers still trailed 13-6.

The Pioneers tried to mount a comeback in the seventh as they added two more runs but would end up dropping game one, 13-6.

Glenville State tallied 10 hits in the contest while Davis & Elkins finished with 16 hits.

Colby Werry went 2-for-4 with two RBI's while Mathew Mangum went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Ryan Rodriguez went 2-for-3 and had an RBI.

Jesse Weathers drops to 1-1 on the mound as he pitched 3.1 innings allowing nine runs giving up 10 hits while striking out three batters.

Game Two:

Tre'von Smith would break the scoreless game in the bottom of the third as he hit an infield single to the shortstop with two outs as Ryan Rodriguez came home as GSC took a 1-0 lead. Then later Duane Englund hit a line drive to center scoring Colby Werry and Zach Morris as the Pioneers now led the Senators, 3-0.

In the fourth, GSC added one more run as Colby Werry hit an RBI single to center field scoring Mathew Mangum as the Pioneers now led 4-0.

The Pioneers hot bats continued in the bottom of the fifth as they had two more players cross the plate as they now held a 6-0 lead over Davis & Elkins.

D&E would add a late run in the seventh but the Pioneers would end up taking game two, 6-1.

Glenville State tallied six hits while Davis & Elkins finished with four hits.

Tre'von Smith went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Duane Englund finished the ballgame 1-for-3 with two RBI's.

Diego Tamariz earned his second win on the mound of the season pitching a two-hitter against the Senators. He went 6.0 inning allowing no runs and striking out seven batters.

Inside the Box Score

Glenville State one the day totaled 16 hits whereas Davis & Elkins tallied 20 in the ball game.

Ryan Rodriguez hit 3-for-5 while scoring two runs as Tre'von Smith scored two RBIs with two hits.

Colby Werry tallied three hits and three RBIs while drawing a walk and scoring a run.

Ryker Rivera was 1-for-1 as he also drew a walk and scored a run.

Coming Up

The Blue and White will return to the complex Saturday April 17th at 1:00 for a double header matchup in MEC play.
