Three Pioneers Go Yard, Not Enough to Pass Yellow Jackets

Glenville, W.Va. – Despite multiple home runs from the Pioneers (13-10, 9-9 MEC) they dropped two close contest in the opening doubleheader of their four game series with the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State University (17-7, 14-4 MEC) on Saturday.

How It Happened

Game One:

Jump to the top of the second inning and the Yellow Jackets of WVSU would have a chance at striking first but two great catches in the outfield by GSC's Mathew Mangum and then Tre'von Smith would keep them off the board.

Then Duane Englund would break the tie in the bottom of the second as he hit his seventh bomb of the season to right field putting the Pioneers up 1-0.

The Yellow Jackets then took their first lead of the ballgame in the top of the third off of an RBI single by Michael Stone scoring Brett Christian and then Matt Harrison hit a three run home run all with two outs as they took a 4-1 lead over GSC.

Ryan Rodriguez then pulled the Pioneers within two runs as he hit a solo home run, his second of the season, to left field as he made it 4-2 as we headed into the fourth inning.

The Yellow Jackets then extended their lead to five runs as they held a 7-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Colby Werry then hit the third home run of the game for the Pioneers with two outs which also scored Ryan Rodriguez as GSC made it, 7-4 heading into the sixth.

Adam Riggleman would hold the Yellow Jackets scoreless in the top of the seventh and would keep the score at 7-4 with one more chance at the plate.

Glenville State then in the seventh went three up and three down as they fell in game one to the Yellow Jackets, 7-4.

GSC tallied five hits while WVSU finished with seven hits in game one.

Colby Werry, Duane Englund, and Ryan Rodriguez all had home runs in the contest for the Pioneers. Werry also had two RBI's in the contest.

Adam Riggleman went the entire contest allowing seven runs on seven hits with five strike outs.

Ethan Lauchart earned the victory on the mound pitching 4.2 innings allowing four runs on five hits with five strike outs. Andrew Stone came on in and earned his second save of the year.

Game Two:

GSC would strike first in the first when Tre'von hit an RBI single scoring Colby Werry as they led 1-0.

Then jump to the bottom of the second and the Pioneers would add to their lead. Chase Swain would hit an RBI ground ball up the middle scoring Tyler Phillips after he was hit by a pitch as they led 2-0. Also in the inning Mathew Mangum would cross the plate on a double play as GSC took a 3-0 lead into the third inning.

The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard in the third, scoring two runs on three hits but still trailed the Pioneers 3-2.

WVSU then tied the game up at 3-3 in the fifth scoring one run off of two hits.

Jump to the seventh and Matt Harrison would give the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the game with a home run to center field as GSC now trailed 4-3.

Glenville State would get a shot at it in the bottom of the seventh but would have three quick outs as they fell to the Yellow Jackets, 4-3.

GSC finished with six hits and had one error while WVSU tallied eights.

Tre'von Smith went 1-for-3 with an RBI while Chase Swain also went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Nicholas Shumek had the loss on the mound as he pitched 2.0 innings allowing one run on two hits with three strike outs. Joe Rubalcaba pitched 4.1 innings allowing three runs on six hits with a strike out.

WVSU's Daniel Brandon earned the win on the mound pitching 5.0 innings allowing three hits with two strike outs.

Inside the Box Score

Glenville State tallied 15 hits in the two games while West Virginia State finished with 15 hits.

Colby Werry had two hits, two runs scored, a home run, two RBI's and a walk. Ryan Rodriguez had a home run while Chase Swain had a hit and an RBI. Duane Englund finished with two hits and a homerun.

Coming Up

Glenville State will return to action tomorrow Sunday, April 18 for another doubleheader with the Yellow Jackets to complete the weekend's four game series. Game three is slated for 1pm.
