West Virginia State Tops Pioneers in Games Three and Four

Glenville, W.Va. – Costly runners left on base causes Glenville State (13-12, 9-11 MEC) to drop games three and four to the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State (19-7, 16-4 MEC) at home on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened

Game One:

The Pioneers scored two runs in the first inning as they took a 2-0 lead. GSC two runs came on an error by the Yellow Jackets as Tre'von Smith scored and then a walk with the bases loaded as Duane Englund crossed the plate as GSC led 2-0.

The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the top of the second as Noah Cummings scored on a wild pitch by GSC's Jose Rodriguez. Then an RBI single by Matt Harrison saw Brett Christian score as they tied it up at 2-2.

Brett Christian would break the tie in the fourth as he blasted a home run over the left field fence as GSC now trailed 3-2. Then in the same inning Matt Harrison blasted another solo home run over left field as well as they held a 4-2 lead as we headed to the bottom of the inning.

Glenville State added a run in the fifth when Shane Talavacchio hit a double off of the left field wall as Tyler Phillips scored making it 4-3. Then in the same inning Mathew Mangum would score off of an RBI by Spencer Blackburn as they tied it up at 4-4 as we headed into the sixth.

WVSU broke the tie in the seventh as Andrew Stone scored on an RBI double from Matthew Kline as they led 5-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Pioneers had some great at bats as they loaded the bases with just one out. Spencer Blackburn then struck out to give WVSU two outs as Ryan Rodriguez came to the plate. Ryan on the first pitch would fly out center as the Pioneers fell, 5-4.

Glenville State tallied nine hits with two errors in the game while West Virginia State had eight hits and one error.

Colby Werry went 2-for-4 while Tre'von Smith went 1-for-4 and scored a run. Duane Englund went 2-for-4 and scored a run while Shane Talvacchio tallied two RBI's and Spencer Blackburn also finished with an RBI.

Josh Cline picked up the loss on the mound as he went 5.0 innings allowing seven hits, three runs, and had four strike outs.

Jacob Bradey earned the win for WVSU as he pitched 1.2 innings with one strike out and Andrew Stone earned the save on the mound.
Game Two:

The Pioneers scored two early runs in the second inning as Mathew Mangum singled to center scoring Tyler Phillips and then Shane Talvacchio hit a double scoring Mangum as they took a 2-0 lead.

However, the Yellow Jackets responded in the top of the third as they scored three runs on two hits to take a 3-2 lead over GSC.

WVSU added another run in the top of the fourth as they went up 4-2 over the Pioneers.

The Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the top of the seventh as they scored two more runs as they now led 6-2.

In the seventh, GSC's Spencer Blackburn flied out to right, then Ryan Rodriguez fouled out to first base, and then Colby Werry hit a ground ball to second base and was out at first base as the Pioneers fell 6-2.

Glenville State tallied five hits while they allowed the Yellow Jackets to have seven hits.

Tre'von Smith went 1-for-3 while Tyler Phillips went 1-for-1 and scored a run. Shane Talvacchio went 1-for-2 while Mathew Mangum went 1-for-3, scored a run, and had an RBI.  

Diego Tamariz pitched 6.0 innings allowing four runs on four hits with seven strike outs.

Inside the Box Score

Glenville State finished both contest with 14 hits while West Virginia State finished with 15 hits.

Tre'von in the two games went 2-for-7 and scored a run while Tyler Phillips went 2-4 and scored two runs. Shane Talvacchio went 1-for-2 with two RBI's.

Coming Up

Glenville State returns to action on Wednesday, April 21 when they host non-conference opponent Bluefield State in a doubleheader from the Sue Morris Sports Complex. Game one is slated for 1pm.
