Pioneers Split Doubleheader with Bobcats, Winning Game Two in Walk-off Walk

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers (10-7, 6-6 MEC) split a doubleheader with the Bobcats of Frostburg State University (5-11, 3-6 MEC) on Saturday winning game two in walk off fashion in extra innings.

How It Happened

Game One:

After a scoreless start, Frostburg State got on the board first with a 4-0 lead ending the third. 

Ryan Rodriguez opened the Pioneer's offensive attack at the plate with a single to right field but would be held at first.

The Pioneers scored their only run in the fourth as Duane Englund drew a walk to start the inning. Tre'von Smith singled to left as both runners would advance on wild pitches and scoring Englund on a sacrifice fly hit by Tyler Phillips making it, 4-1.

In the fifth, Colby Werry doubled to left but again the Pioneers trailed 4-1.

In the Pioneer's final crack at the bats, Collin Gross drew a walk and would be thrown out at second off Ryan Rodriguez's fielder's choice. Mathew Mangum also drew a walk and again tossed at second though advancing Ryan Rodriguez to third on Werrys' fielder's choice. However, the Pioneers fell 4-1.

Tyler Phillips went 0-for-2 with an RBI while Ryan Rodriguez went 1-for-3 and Mathew Mangum went 1-for-2.

Nicholas Shumek got the loss on the mound as he pitched 2.2 innings allowing four runs on two hits with five strike outs.

Game Two:

Both the Pioneers and Bobcats would go scoreless behind good defense and pitching until the top of the fourth.

Frostburg State's Bryce Jackson would end that as he went yard to right field putting the Bobcats ahead, 1-0.

Duane Englund then tied the contest up at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth after going deep to left hitting his fourth homer of the season.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ryan Rodriguez would start the inning with a single to right. Mathew Mangum then moved Rodriguez to second as he bunted and beat the throw at first to put two runners on with no outs. Then Colby Werry advance the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt with just one out. But the Pioneers could not capitalize as they left the runners stranded and still tied up at 1-1 heading into the sixth.

Neither team could add to their total as we headed into extra innings.

Frostburg State broke the tie in the top of the eighth with a two run RBI single to left from Jack Lawrence as they now lead 3-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

Glenville State however would not go away. In the bottom of the eighth, Zach Morris would be hit by pitch but then right after that Duane Englund struck out as the Pioneers had one on with one out.

Tre'von Smith then reached on a fielder's choice but Morris was out at second base. Then with two outs, Ryker Rivera, who came into pinch hit, walked which then advanced Smith to second. After that Shane Talvacchio hit a grounder up the middle with all base runners being safe and the Pioneers trailing 3-1 with two outs and the bases loaded. Spencer Blackburn was also walked as Smith crossed the plate making it, 3-2.

After a pitching change for the Bobcats, Ryan Rodriguez was walked as Rivera scored tying it up at 3-3.

Then GSC would end the game as Mathew Mangum drew a walk, scoring Joshua Probst, a pinch runner. The Pioneers won in extra innings with a walk-off walk, 4-2.

Dunae Englund went 1-for-4 on the day while hitting his team-leading fourth home run. Spencer Blackburn, Ryan Rodriguez, and Mathew Mangum each had an RBI in the game.

Diego Tamariz had a great outing on the mound. He pitched 7.0 inning allowing just one run on four hits with six strike outs. Jacob Harmon got the win on the mound.

Glenville State tallied eight hits in the two games while Frostburg State finished with 12.

Duane Englund went 1-for-6 with a home run while Mathew Mangum went 2-for-5.

Coming Up

Glenville State will return to the diamond this coming Saturday, April 10 and 11 as they host the Davis & Elkins Senators in a four game series. Both days game one is set to start at 1pm.
