LARRY GANDEE – Gandee came to GSC in the Fall of 1958 out Clendenin High School, following several other members of the Gandee family to the Pioneers. Gandee became a starter in his first season, playing for Pioneer Hall of Fame head coach Leland Byrd.
Gandee was joined by fellow Kanawha County native (and fellow GSC Hall of Famer) Tim Carney in Byrd's regular rotation in 1959. He averaged 9.3 points per game, and 4.4 rebounds per game that first year, and remained as a steady presence in the lineup throughout his career.
Glenville improved every year during Gandee's career, going 8-20, 12-15, 14-13, and finally 16-11 in 1962. He played his senior season under Coach Jesse Lilly. He closed his career with 1153 career points, and 432 rebounds.
After college Gandee joined Carney on the Coaching staff at Gwynn Park High School in Maryland. He was promoted to head coach after Carney returned to Glenville in 1969, and enjoyed a stellar career on the GPHS bench. He posted a career record of 237-74, and led his team to eight state title games, winning six.
Several Gwynn Park players went on to star for Coach Lilly at GSC, including Hall of Famers Earl Hawkins and Ron Jones. Gandee's nephew Steve is also a member of the GSC Hall of Fame.
