Lady Pioneers Pickup Key Road Win

Box Score

ATHENS – Glenville's Lady Pioneers gained an element of revenge Saturday afternoon.

After losing in each of the last two seasons at Concord, GSC utilized a third-quarter explosion to defeat the Mountain Lions in Athens, 105-67. In doing so, the nation's third ranked team is now 16-0 overall, and 11-0 in the Mountain East Conference.

In the opening minutes, Concord held a 7-5 lead, but GSC responded with a 13-0 run to gain some early separation with an 18-7 lead. They carried this on to a 25-16 lead after the first quarter, and 44-32 at the halftime break. While GSC was not on point with their shooting in the first half, their hard work on the boards created 11 offensive rebounds, and a primary reason for their halftime advantage.

In the third quarter, the Lady Pioneers erupted. Concord cut the margin to 46-37 in the first 90 seconds of the half, but Glenville would record steals in the next three CU possessions (two by Zakiyah Winfield and one by Vendela Danielsson) spearheading a 10-0 run and a 56-37 lead.

GSC never looked back.

Coach Kim Stephens' squad had found a rhythm at that point. They would tally 35 points in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 79-54 after the stanza. The advantage climbed above 30 in the final frame.

Winfield produced another strong stat line; 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Danielsson produced one of her best floor games as a Lady Pioneer; 16 points, a team-high eight rebounds, and three steals. Abby Stoller and Mashayla Cecil both hit double figures with 15 and 14 points respectively. Taychaun Hubbard recorded a team-high two blocked shots, and chipped in with six rebounds. Her eight points included a myriad of difficult makes on drives to the basket. Dazha Congleton matched her team leaders with four assists and three steals.

For the game, GSC held a 43-32 advantage in team rebounding; an area that had been an issue in previous trips to Athens. They collected 16 steals, and produced 27 points Concord turnovers. Shooting wise, the Lady Pioneers were 40-of-82 from the floor (48.8%), and 12-of-32 from three-point land (37.5%).

Riley Fitzwater led Concord, producing another double-double. She scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while teammate Maddie Ratcliff contributed 14 points as well.

Concord falls to 12-6 overall, and 7-5 in the MEC.

Glenville returns to the Waco Center on Wednesday night, hosting Alderson-Broaddus. Tip-off is set for 5:30 on the McPherson Court.
