GSU Volleyball Loses Another Close Home Match 3-2


Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State's Volleyball team played in their third straight home Mountian East Conference match. The Lady Pioneers fell in another five-set match 3-2 this time to Alderson Broaddus University. Both teams finished the match with 11 service aces.

In the first set, the Pioneers opened the frame on a 7-3 run. Katarzyna Niderla was heavily involved in the early streak producing kills and a service ace. The Battlers continued to fight back eventually tying the stanza at 16-16. Alberson Broadus would take advantage of mistakes made by the Lady Pioneers. After trailing 24-23, Glenville closed out the frame on a 4-1 run winning the set 27-25.

Riding the momentum from the first stanza the Pioneers continued where they had left off. Glenville would lead the entire second set. Back-to-back service aces by Sarah Grainger kicked off the Lady Pioneers' dominant stretch. The Battlers brought the frame back to within seven. However, Glenville took the last three points winning the set 25-10. Kills by Nalinia Funk and Rita Kelly closed helped the Pioneers close out the stanza.

Alderson Broaddus would take the next set 25-19. Neither team was able to create separation until the halfway point. After taking three out of the next four points the Battlers took the lead 16-12. The Pioneers responded by taking the next two points. Consecutive small runs by Alderson Broaddus closed out the frame.

The Battlers gaining confidence from the previous set carried it to the fourth. Besides leading at the 9-8 mark, the Lady Pioneers trailed the entire fame. AB's largest lead would come at the end of the stanza where they led by six forcing a fifth set. The Pioneers in back-to-back matches headed to a decisive fifth set.

Both squads battled throughout the final frame of the match. After trailing by four, The Lady Pioneers produced an 8-1 run to take the lead 13-10. Kills by Helín Halden and errors made by Alderson Broaddus helped the Pioneers throughout the stretch. However, the Battlers would take the next five points to win the match.  Alderson Broaddus during this run took advantage of four consecutive errors by the Pioneers.

Katarzyna Niderla led the Pioneers in kills with 22 followed by Zoe Schmidt with 10. Sarah Grainger accounted for 46 assists and three service aces. Defensively Lindsay Winkler had a team-high in digs with 21. Both Sophie Shifferly and Zoe Schmidt finished the match with 15 digs. Nalaina Funk and Niderla produced five blocks for Glenville.
