Lady Pioneers Force Four Sets Against West Virginia State

Glenville, W.Va - Glenville State's Volleyball ended their stretch of four straight home matches against perennial Mountain East Conference power West Virginia State University. The Lady Pioneers battled the Yellow Jackets forcing a fourth set. Coach Kevin John's squad would make two fewer service errors than West Virginia State.

Glenville opened the match by taking the first set 25-23. The Pioneers produced the largest lead of the frame at the 9-5 mark. A 4-1 run propelled the Lady Pioneers to take a four-point advantage. During this stretch, Glenville took advantage of two errors by West Virginia State. The Yellow Jackets only led at the beginning of the set by two. However, West Virginia State tied the stanza five times. Back-to-back kills by Zoe Schmidt and Nalaina Funk helped the Pioneers to a two-point cushion. The Lady Pioneers' back-to-back kills proved to be enough for Glenville to close the set.

Both teams continued to battle in the second frame. The lead changed ten times and there was a total of 13 ties. West Virginia State took the second set 26-24. While the Yellow Jackets' largest lead would only be three, they held on to the lead until the 17-18 mark. Katarzyna Niderla's ace gave the Pioneer a one-point advantage, but a service error tied it back up at 18-18. A kill by Nalaina Funk sparked a three-point tun for the Lady Pioneers. West Virginia State closed out the frame with a kill and a Glenville attack error to win the set.

Riding the momentum from the previous stanza the Yellow Jackets would take the third set 25-14. After dropping the first point, West Virginia State was in control the entire frame. Later on, the Yellow Jackets extended their lead late 22-12. Glenville would bring the set back to within eight but it proved to be too late. Taking three straight points West Virginia State closed out the frame comfortably. 

The fourth and final set proved to be another battle. While the Lady Pioneers never had the lead, they would tie the Yellow Jackets seven times. After tying West Virginia State at the 19-19 mark the Pioneers dropped four consecutive points. However, Glenville responded bringing the fourth set back to within one late. An attack error by the Lady Pioneers and a kill by the Yellow Jackets ended the set 25-22. 

Katarzyna Niderla led the Pioneers in kills tonight with 14 followed by Nalaina Funk and Zoe Schmidt with 12. Funk a Freshman would have a team-high in blocks with five. Sarah Grainger accounted for a match-high 40 assists. Defensively, Lindsay Winkler finished the match with 24 digs followed by Transfer Zoe Schmidt with 18.

The Lady Pioneers hit the road and face the University Of Charleston Friday night at 7:00 PM.
