Lady Pioneers Fall to MEC South Division Leader UC 3-1

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State's Women's Volleyball team was back on the road against the University of Charleston Golden Eagles. In the Wehrle Innovation Center, the Golden Eagles defeated the Pioneers 3-1. After taking the first set, the Lady Pioneers dropped the next three. Glenville finished the match with nine more errors than the University of Charleston. 

In the first set, the Pioneers opened the frame with the lead. While Glenville would be tested throughout the stanza even falling behind UC. Early on the Golden Eagles took a one-point lead. An 8-1 run sparked by a Service error by the University of Charleston helped the Lady Pioneers regain the advantage. Once again UC found a way to swing the momentum back in their favor. Damon McKenzie would be a key contributor during this stretch for Golden Eagles. Glenville pulled away late after the frame was tied at 23-23. A kill by Zoe Schmidt and an error by the University of Charleston won the Lady Pioneers the first set.

UC dominated the second stanza leading the entire time. Glenville would tie the Golden Eagles 1-1 but never got back into the set. At the halfway point the University of Charleston led by eight and continued to build upon it. A 10-4 run late closed out the frame for the Golden Eagles 25-13.

Riding the momentum from the previous set the University of Charleston would take the following two sets by 21 points. Glenville did take the first point of the frame. However, the Lady Pioneers surged late taking six straight points from the Golden Eagles. During the run, Katarzyna Niderla produced four service aces for the Pioneers. Taking the next two points UC closed out the set 25-16 leading the match 2-1.

In the fourth and final frame, Glenville would be competitive keeping the set within four to five points. The Golden Eagles caught fire at the 10-8 mark taking advantage of three consecutive errors made by the Pioneers. This would spark a 12-4 run giving the Golden Eagles a ten-point lead. UCs late surge proved to be too much for the Lady Pioneers. 

Zoe Schmidt finished the match with a match-high 13 kills followed by Katarzyna Niderla with 12. Niderla also produced three blocks and four aces for the Pioneers. Junior Sarah Grainger accounted for a team-high 35 assists. Lindsay Winkler led the Pioneers in digs with 16.
