Lady Pioneers Make History in Win over West Virginia Wesleyan

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State's Women's Volleyball team defeated the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan 3-2. The Lady Pioneers' win over WVWC marks the first time in program history that Glenville will make the Mountain East Conference Tournament. Glenville finished the match with a total of ten kills, four more than the Bobcats.

In the first set, West Virginia Wesleyan jumped to an early lead and did not look back. After taking the first point of the frame, the Bobcats lead the entire time. Trailing 7-2 the Lady Pioneers did bring the stanza back to within in two points. A 12-2 run by WVWC provided an ample amount of momentum to take the set 25-13. During this stretch, Glenville committed a slew of errors.

Glenville regrouped after dropping the first set taking the next two by a total of 15 points. Not until the 7-7 mark would the Lady Pioneers start to pull away. Nalaina Funk, Rita Kelly, and Zoe Schmidt were all key contributors to building Glenville's lead. Glenville consistently had a five-point cushion after the halfway mark. However, the Bobcats late in the frame tested the Pioneers bringing the set back to within two. Taking five out of the next eight points Glenville closed out the stanza 25-20. 

Both teams battled throughout the third frame. Until the 13-12 mark of the set, there would be a total of five lead changes. The Lady Pioneers producing a late dominant run propelled them to take control of the stanza. Five consecutive errors by West Virginia Wesleyan helped Glenville's run continue. A Kill by Katarzyna Niderla ended the set for the Pioneers taking it 25-15.

Once again both squads battle in the beginning understanding what is at stake. After being all square at the 3-3 mark, West Virginia Wesleyan grasped control of the fourth set. The largest lead for the Bobcats would be nine late in the frame. By taking six straight points the Lady Pioneers brought the stanza back to within three. During this stretch, WVWC committed four errors. Going on a 6-1 run the Bobcats closed out the set 25-17 forcing a decisive fifth set.

Glenville would take the fifth frame 15-12 after trailing for most of the set. Besides the early portion of the stanza, the Pioneers consistently kept it within three points. The Lady Pioneers' 7-1 run provided enough momentum to take the set and match. A Kills by Katarzyna Niderla and Zoe Schmidt helped propel Glenville.

Setter Sarah Grainger accounted for 32 assists in tonight's match. Katarzyna Niderla and Zoe Schmidt both lead the Pioneers in kills with 12. Freshman Nalaina Funk produced seven blocks for Glenville followed by Rita Kelly with four. Defensively Sophie Shifferly and Sarah Grainger finished the match with seven digs.
