Pioneers Fall in Season Opener to Salem 92-85

Box Score Coach Caldwell's squad opened up the first half of play with a 10-2 lead. The Tigers after starting the game on a cold streak started to hit shots. With help from Jordan "Turbo" Smith, Glenville was to persevere Salem's charge.

The Pioneers midway through the half had a cold streak of their own. For five minutes Glenville could not buy a bucket. GSU would only shoot 31.8% from the field in the first half. A layup by Harrison Eghan snapped the streak.

Towards the end of the half Glenville picked up the tempo. In the first half, the Pioneers finished with 11 fast break points. Layups by Smith and Jacquez Yow helped them take a seven-point lead with a minute left. Smith finished the first half with ten points. Yow close behind producing six points along with two rebounds and a steal. With the clock waining Salem's Mark Anthony Fields scored a pull-up jump shot cutting the Pioneer's lead down to five.

Glenville opened up the second half of play on fire making four of their first six shots. Before the first media timeout, Salem went on a 15-3 run hitting every single shot that they took. Justin Tane and Stan Smith were key contributors for the Tigers during this stretch. Smith led Salem in scoring with 22.

Both squads battled throughout the second with a total of nine lead changes occurring. Just as in the first half Glenville would hit another cold spell going one for nine from the field. Salem continued to shoot the ball well in the half taking a 10-point lead. The Tigers finished the second half shooting 66% from the field and 63% from three.

The Pioneers would have a tough task ahead of them in the last four minutes. Glenville continued to battle but Salem continued to hot shots resulting in a GSU defeat 92-85.

Jordan "Turbo" Smith and Freddie Word both finished the game over the 20-point mark. Smith led the Pioneers in scoring with 26 and paired it with 10 rebounds. Word was close behind wrapping up the contest with 25.

A Look at Edinboro

The Fighting Scotts opened their season with a loss to Fairmont State University at the Joe Retton Classic. Graduate Senior Kierell Green opened up the 2022-23 campaign with 22 points. The 6'8 athletic forward from Washington, D.C could potentially cause problems for the Pioneers.

Edinboro is coached by Pat Cleary who enters his tenth season under the helm. Last season the Fighting Scots were (9-17) overall and (7-14) in the PSAC. Coach Clearly returns most of his squad from the 2022-23 season.
