The Pioneers Travel to the University of Charleston Before Break in Conference Play

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball team hits the road before a short break from conference play. The Pioneers are 2-8 in the last ten matchups against the University of Charleston. With the Golden Eagles losing Lamont McManus Charleston's youth has been tested this season.

A Look at the University of Charleston

UC enters Tuesday afternoon's contest with a (2-2) overall record and (1-0) in the Mountian East Conference. Head coach Dwaine Osborne enters his tenth season with the Golden Eagles. Osborne has made four MEC Championship game appearances in the past nine seasons. In the 2019-20 season, the University of Charleston won the MEC tournament before Covid-19 shut down the NCAA tournament. 

To open conference play UC defeated Concord University 82-77 last season. The Golden Eagles had four players finish with double figures. Tyle Eberhart led Charleston in scoring with 17 followed by Keith Williams and Eddie Colbert III with 15. Colbert III produced a double-double paring his 15 points with 10 rebounds.

So far this season Charleston's defense has only allowed 73.8 points per game which ranks fourth in the conference. Under Coach Osborne, the Golden Eagles have been one of the better defensive teams in the league. Through four games coach Osborne's squad is tenth in the conference for offensive rebounds averaging 11 per contest.

Currently, three of UC's players are averaging 10 or more points. Eddie Colbert III leads the Golden Eagles in scoring with 15.3 points per game and rebounds with 7.8 per game. Sophomore Tyler Eberhart is averaging 14.3 points per game followed by senior Keith Williams with 12.8

A Look at Your Pioneers

The Pioneers are coming off a defeat to West Virginia State from last Saturday's conference opener. Glenville State enters Tuesday with a (1-2) overall record and (0-1) in conference play. Under coach Caldwell this season, the Pioneers are one of the best teams in the conference in offensive rebounds averaging 17.7 a game.

GSU continues to be one of the best teams in the country at forcing turnovers. Through three games the Pioneers on average force 25.33 turnovers a contest which is second in the nation. Glenville's average turnover margin is also ranked inside the top five in the country.

Three separate Pioneers this season have had 20-point-plus performances. Jordan "Turbo" Smith and Freddie Word in the first game of the season combined for 51 points with Smith producing 26 and Word with 25. Junior Jarmavious Jones in the contest against the Yellow Jackets accounted for 22 points. Word and Trevor Chandler have been Glenville's best rebounders so far this season. Currently, Word averages 6.0 per game with Chandler close behind with 4.3 per game.
