GSU Men’s Basketball Returns Home to Face Rivals Alderson Broaddus

Glenville, W.Va- After a close loss to MEC foe Notre Dame college Wednesday night, the Pioneers return home to the Waco center Saturday night to continue MEC play against Alderson Broaddus. AB comes into the game Saturday night still trying to find their first road win of the season, their single win of the season so far coming at home against Wheeling University.

A Look at Alderson Broaddus

AB enters Saturday night's contest with a (1-5) overall record and (1-2) in the Mountain East Conference. The battlers' lone win on the season against Wheeling University came down to the wire with a 79-75 win over the Cardinals. Historically the Battlers have struggled in games on the road, winning only 8 games away from their home court in the past 3 years.

The Battlers are coached by Stephan Dye who enters his fourth season as head coach. Before coming to AB, Dye was the Head Men's Basketball Coach for Glenville State University. While at Glenville, Dye led the Pioneers to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time in school history, and he also captured the 2015 MEC Championship. Currently at Alderson Broaddus Coach Dye is (30-51) overall and (16-25) in the league.

As a team, the Battlers are averaging 69 points per game which is 11th in the league. Similarly to the Pioneers, Alderson Broaddus is towards the bottom of the league in team three-point percentage shooting 25.5% from deep. However, Coach Dye's squad has distributed the ball averaging 13.5 assists per game.

The Battlers come into the game with a strong three-point defense, ranking second in the conference and 59th in the nation. AB is led by senior Jalen Collins who leads the team in field goal percentage and currently ranks sixth in the conference. Jon King leads the team in defensive rebounds ranking ninth in the conference. The Battlers also return the MEC Freshman of the year Jalen Knott.

A Look at Your Pioneers

Glenville enters Saturday's matchup with a (2-4) record and (0-3) in league play. The last time the Pioneers played AB, Glenville State would finish the game on top winning 89-81. Before Glenville defeated the Battlers last season, GSU had lost three consecutive matchups against Alderson Broaddus.

While the Pioneers as a team have not shot the ball well this season, they have been active on the glass. Through six games Coach Caldwell's squad averages 16 offensive rebounds per game ranking them first in the conference and sixth in the nation. Glenville has also been solid this season at creating pressure on the defensive end. When opponents are facing the Pioneers on average they are producing 21.7 turnovers. Consistently creating around 21 turnovers a game GSU has been dominant in the turnover battle winning it on average by 7.8.

Jordan "Turbo" Smith leads the Pioneers in scoring averaging 15.3 per contest. Twice this season the Titusville, Fla. native has scored 20 or more points. Guard Freddie Word is close behind producing 14.3 points per game. Word opened up the 2022-23 campaign with consecutive double-doubles. Transfer Jacquez Yow contributed on both sides of the ball. Against Notre Dame College Yow was one rebound shy of a double-double scoring 15 points and grabbing nine boards.
