GSU Men’s Basketball Faces Frostburg State in Mid-Week Matchup

Glenville, W.Va. - After winning back-to-back games for the first time this season, the Pioneers resume conference play against Frostburg State University. Wednesday's matchup marks the sixth time that these teams have met. Glenville is (3-2) all-time in the series and (2-0) inside the Waco Center.

A Look at Frostburg State

Frostburg State enters the contest with a (3-5) overall record and (1-3) in the Mountain East Conference. The Bobcats' lone conference play win came against West Virginia Wesleyan. Since then Frostburg has played three teams all in the top half of the league standings.

The Bobcats are coached by Sean Brown Sr. who enters his fifth season under the helm. Since arriving in 2018, Coach Brown Sr. has posed a record of (35-71). In the 2021-22 season under Coach Brown, the Bobcats had their first All-MEC Selection, Agyei Edwards.

As a team, Frostburg State ranks towards the bottom of the league in team field goal percentage and points per game. Through eight games the Bobcats average 73.9 points per game on 42.5% Shooting from the field. However, Frostburg has proven to be a solid rebounding team throughout the 2022-23 campaign. On average FSU is winning the rebounding battle by 2.3 rebounds per contest.

Tairell Fletcher, Agyei Edwards, and Jason Murphy have been key contributors for the Bobcats. Fletcher a junior from Arkansas Baptist, currently sits fifth in the MEC for points per game averaging 18.8. Agyei Edwards returns for his senior season. Edwards, a transfer from Millersville is close to averaging a double-double for Frostburg scoring 12.8 points per contest along with grabbing 7.1 rebounds per game. Division, I Transfer Jason Murphy wraps up FSU's big three. Murphy has already produced two double-doubles this season.

A Look at Your Pioneers

With the Pioneers' hot shooting from the previous two games, they enter tonight's contest with a (4-4) overall record and (1-3) in the MEC. In Glenville's last time out, both Jamarvious Jones and Freddie Word combined for 21 points. The Pioneers finished the game shooting 44% from three.

Coach Caldwell's squad continues to be ranked inside the top ten in the country in turnovers forced and turnover margin. On average GSU is winning the turnover battle by seven which is seventh in the country. With Glenville starting to find their rhythm shooting the ball, they are now the 17th-ranked scoring offense in the country. The Pioneers also continue to be among the best in offensive rebounding. So far during the 2022-23 season, GSU is producing 15.2 offensive rebounds per game.

The backcourt duo of Freddie Word and Jordan "Turbo" Smith continues to be the Pioneers leading scores. Both guards combined are currently averaging 33.5 points per game. Word a native of Fort Myers, Fla. is one of Glenville's leading rebounders. Through the first eight games of the season, Word is producing 7.1 rebounds per game. In the last two games, Harrison Eghan has been a consistent double-double. Since the Alderson Broaddus game, Eghan is accounting for 14.5 points per game and 13.5 points per contest.
