Glenville Ends Mansfield Series With Double Header Sweep

GLENVILLE – For the first time in Glenville Baseball history, the Pioneers captured a series from a PSAC team. They consummated this feat on Sunday, sweeping a scrappy Mansfield University squad, 4-0 and 8-5. In doing so, Coach Jimmy Mullins' squad took three games in the weekend's four-game set with the Mountaineers.

Adam Riggleman was the story in game one on Sunday, as the veteran pitcher twirled a gem. Riggleman went the distance, firing a four-hit, six strikeout performance. He did not walk a batter, moving his season record to 2-0.

Trevon Smith, who became the school's all-time hits leader on Saturday, drove home the day's first run, plating Devonte Ellis-Rose with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth. The Pioneers scored three add-on runs in the fifth, highlighted by a Ryan Rodriguez RBI-single that brought home Fabian Esclaante. Matthew Mangum and Rodriguez scored the game's final two runs on a Mansfield throwing error.

In game two, the Pioneers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Escalante induced a bases-loaded walk, scoring Smith with the day's first run. This was followed by a two-RBI double from Mangum that scored Mitch Lohr and Zach Morris. The final two runs in the frame came on a two-RBI single from Rodriguez that scored Escalante and Mangum.

Mansfield responded with five runs of their own in the second. This came on the wings of a two-run homer from Samuel Feedman, and a three-run blast from Dylan Mercedes. The game remained tied until the bottom of the fourth, when the Pioneers regained control with a three-run inning. Again, it was Rose wreaking havoc on the base paths, advancing on a wild pitch, then scoring on a Smith grounder, Trevon's second RBI of the day. Smith scored on a Zach Morris single and a follow-up throwing error, with Morris tallying the final run laser Escalante double.

Austin Corn pitched in relief to provide the win, registering five shutout innings. He struck out five while walking only one.

Rodriguez posted three hits in the doubleheader, while Smith, Lohr, Morris, Escalante, and Mangum all had multi-hit days.

Glenville improves to 7-1 with the doubleheader sweep. Mansfield falls to 1-3.

The Pioneers host a weekend long tournament next weekend at the Sue Morris Complex. They open play on Friday, hosting Kutztown at 6:00 PM.
