WEST LIBERTY – Glenville's regionally ranked Pioneer baseball team opened Mountain East Conference play on Sunday afternoon, and played to a doubleheader split on the road at West Liberty. The Hilltoppers came away with a 2-0 victory in the opener, with the Pioneers rebounding in earnest, producing a convincing 10-0 win in the nightcap.
West Liberty's Justin Pennybacker stifled the GSU hitters in Game One, firing a complete game shutout, allowing only two Pioneer hits. The Hilltoppers plated single runs in the second and fifth innings to take the contest. Glenville's Diego Tamariz provided another quality start in the hard-luck loss, going four and two-thirds and only allowing one earned run. Tamariz struck out seven, giving up four hits, and yielding only one walk, as his record falls to 4-1.
Game Two was a different story.
Starter Adam Riggleman was again on point, and the Pioneer bats came alive with 14 hits and 10 runs. They settled the issue early with three runs in the first, two in the second, and two in the third, staking a 7-0 advantage after two and a half innings. Three more insurance runs came across in the lengthy sixth inning frame. Darius Barton led the attack with a three-for-four game, while four of his teammates delivered a two-for-four line; Yadiel Agosto, Fabian Escalante, Calen Kampes, and Zach Morris. Escalante, Trevon Smith, Ryan Rodriguez, and Matthew Mangum all had two-RBI days in the Game Two box.
Riggleman continued his outstanding 2022 campaign, firing six and a third shutout innings, allowing only three hits. He struck out 11, while walking two. He extends his record to 5-0 with the win. Nick Moore came on to record the final two outs of the contest.
Coach Jimmy Mullins' Pioneers are now 13-3 overall, and 1-1 in the MEC. West Liberty is 1-14 overall, and also 1-1 in the MEC. Glenville remains in the North Panhandle tomorrow, coming off the hill to face Wheeling University in a Monday matinee doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:00.
