WHEELING – Coach Jimmy Mullins and the Glenville State Baseball team concluded their first weekend of league play Monday afternoon, splitting a pair of games at Wheeling University. They lost the first game 10-8, and came storming back to take the second game 26-9.
It was an offensive slugfest all day, with the two team combining to tally 53 runs in the doubleheader. In Game One, Wheeling utilized a four-run third and a five-run fourth to mount a 10-3 lead. Glenville produced a strong comeback in a five-run fifth, spearheaded by a three-run homer from Mitch Lohr. Unfortunately, the comeback came up two runs short.
Lohr had four RBI's in the contest, and was complemented by two RBI's from Chase Swain. Yadiel Agosto added a double. Austin Corn was the starter and suffered his first loss of the season, falling to 3-1.
In the nightcap, GSU erupted for a school record 26 runs. This included a three-run first, a six-run second, and a 12-run third as the Pioneers had a 21-6 lead two and a half innings in. GSU produced 18 hits in the barrage, and was the recipient of 16 free passes (10 walks, and six players getting aboard via hit-by-pitch).
These was a high volume of top hitting lines in the GSU box score for Game Two; Fabian Escalante going three-for-four with a double, two RBI's, and four runs scored, Ryan Rodriguez going two-for-three with three runs, Matthew Mangum going one-for-two with three RBI's, Calen Kampes going one-for-three with three RBI's, Trevon Smith going one-for-two with a three-run homer, Mitch Lohr going one-for-three with four runs scored, Zach Morris going two-for-three, Agosto going one-for-two and scoring three runs, and Devonte Rose slugging a double.
On the mound, Chase Swain provided four innings of solid relief in the midst of the offensive fireworks, holding the line and picking up the victory. He allowed four hits, two earned runs, striking out without allowing a walk. Tristan Gasset pitched the final two innings, giving up only one run.
Glenville improves to 14-4 with the split, and they are now 2-2 in the Mountain East Conference. Wheeling is now 6-13 overall, and 2-2 in the league.
Coach Mullins and his Pioneers return to the Sue Morris Complex next weekend, hosting Northern Division foes Notre Dame and Alderson-Broaddus.
