The Pioneers finally break their streak of consecutive losses against South Division foe the University of Charleston. Coming in today's first half of the four-game weekend series, Glenville had been winless against Charleston in the past three seasons. The Pioneers lost a close first game to Charleston 8-9, but the Pioneers came out firing in the second game of the doubleheader and won 6-4.
In-game one of today's contest Charleston's speed and bats were on full display with the team tallying seven stolen bases and three home runs. However, the Pioneers were able to answer with a two-run home run by Mitch Lohr and a solo home run by Trevon Smith. Smith's home run came in the bottom of the second giving Glenville a spark after being down 3-0. The Pioneers were able to eventually tie the game in the bottom of the 5th 6-6. Glenville was not able to take the lead late in the game. Charleston catcher Tyler Dellerman was able to swing the momentum in Charleston's favor with a three-run home run late in the top of the seventh inning. The pioneers with key hits and great plate discipline were able to tack on 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh. Glenville's late charge was led by seniors Hunter Brown and Colby Werry.
In game two the Pioneers struck first in the bottom of the inning with Zach Morris scoring on a passed ball to make it a 1-0 game. Charleston answered in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Tyler Kellerman. Glenville's great base running in today's second game allowed them to score once more on a passed ball to give them the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the third. Just like in the first game of today's doubleheader the bats for the Pioneers were firing on all cylinders. Glenville was able to add four more runs to their lead by great at-bats by Calen Kampes, Fabian Escalante, and Matthew Mangum. Pitcher Adam Riggleman was able to throw the entire game giving the Glenville bullpen a much-needed rest. Riggleman was not phased by the late three-run home run by Charleston's Casey Finck with two outs in the top of the seventh. Riggleman answered back by striking out Charleston's designated hitter, Clay Hale.
With the split, the Pioneers improve to 23-12 overall and 11-11 in the Mountain East Conference. Charleston is now 27-10 overall and 19-3 in the Mountain East Conference. Glenville continues the four-game series tomorrow with game three starting at 1:00 pm Sunday at the Sue Morris Sports Complex
