The Pioneers were able to steal two more wins from division leader Charleston, defeating the Golden Eagles 5-2 and 11-7. Glenville was able to tally three home runs as a team in today's doubleheader. Fabian Escalante led the Pioneers' home run surge by accumulating two home runs in the intense matchup against Charleston. Just like in the first half of the series, both games in today's doubleheader were close to the very end.
The first game of today's doubleheader started as a pitcher's duel with runs coming at a premium. Charleston struck first by scoring two runs in the top of the second inning making it a 2-0 game. The Pioneers were able to answer back with three runs in the bottom of the third to give Glenville the lead. Glenville was able to increase their lead in the bottom of the sixth with a Fabian Escalante two-run homer to make it 5-2. While the Pioneer's offense came in clutch when needed, a strong pitching performance from Julian Minaya and Jose Rodriguez helped seal the deal for the Pioneers. Julian Minaya was able to pick up his fourth win and Jose Rodriguez was able to pick up third save this season.
Game two of today's doubleheader started with Charleston's Tyler Dellerman hitting a solo home run. Tre'von Smith was able to answer for the Pioneers with a three-run homerun in the bottom of the first. Fabian Escalante was able to homer right after Tre'von's three-run shot to right center, giving Glenville the lead 4-1. The Pioneers continued their offensive onslaught by scoring three more runs both in the bottom of the fourth and fifth inning. Charleston tried to make a comeback late in the game with great hitting by Andre Martinez and Tyler Dellerman but their efforts fell short. Pioneers Pitcher Jose Rodriguez was able secure the 11-7 victory for Glenville and picked up another save making it his fourth on the year. Pitcher Diego Tamariz was able collect his sixth win of the season after being out for a month.
Glenville improved their record to 25-13 overall and 13-11 in conference play while Charleston fell to 27-12 overall and 19-5 in conference play. The Pioneers are back in action Saturday at the Sue Morris Sports Complex against West Virginia Wesleyan. The first game of the doubleheader will start at 1:00 pm.
