Glenville, WV - The Pioneers enter today's contest-winning seven out of the last ten games against south division rival West Virginia Wesleyan College. With Glenville still in the hunt to make the Mountain East Conference Tournament, the final portion of conference play is crucial for the Pioneers. The Pioneer's were able to pick up two wins today 7-3 and 6-4 on Friday's doubleheader. In both contests Glenville was able to blast two home runs early in the bottom of the first.
The longball was in play early during the first game of today's doubleheader. Both Glenville and West Virginia Wesleyan produced runs in the first two innings of the contest. Senior Mitch Lohr's two-run home run gave the Pioneer offense an early spark. In the bottom of the fourth Glenville was able to take advantage of Wesleyan's errors. Chase Swain's sacrifice hit drove in the first run in the inning while Hunter Brown reached first on a throwing error to give Glenville a 4-2 lead. Fabian Escalante showed off his arm with a stunning through from home to save a run for the Pioneers in the top of the fifth inning. Pitcher Adam Riggleman was able to have another dominant performance. Riggleman struck out ten batters, only walked one, and pitched a complete game. With today's win Adam Riggleman tied the single season and career record for wins.
Game two of today's doubleheader started with Glenville's Calen Kampes hitting a two-run home run giving the Pioneers an early 2-0 lead. The Glenville bats continued to stay hot in game two. During the bottom of the third Hunter Brown's triple set up the Pioneers to score making it a 4-0 game. Top of the fourth Wesleyan were able to score two runs to cut into the Pioneers lead. Glenville consistently scored throughout the game scoring a run five out of the seven innings played. Julian Minaya Was able to pitch three and two-thirds innings only allowing four hits. Chaise Swain was brought in to relieve Minaya in the top of the fourth picking up his second win of the season.. After bases being loaded in the top of the sixth pitcher Jose Rodriguez was able stop the Wesleyan comeback and pick up the crucial save.
Glenville improved their record to 27-13 overall and 15-11 in conference play while West Virginia Wesleyan fell to 3-34 overall and 3-23 in conference play. The Pioneers are back in action Saturday at the Sue Morris Sports Complex against West Virginia Wesleyan. The first game of the doubleheader will start at 1:00 pm.
