Athens, WV – The Pioneers split the final two game series of the regular season with Concord. Glenville won the first game 14-5 and lost the second 0-5. The Pioneers record improves to 31-15 overall and 19-13 in league play earning them the South Division three seed for the Mountain East Conference Baseball Tournament. This the second time Glenville has reached the playoffs in the program's history.
What Happened
Game One: Glenville 14, Concord 5
In game one against Concord the Pioneers once again were able to get an early lead in the first two innings of the game.
Colby Werry drove in the first of many runs for the Pioneers with an RBI single to right center. The Hitman
Tre'von Smith in the top of the third inning increased Glenville's led to 3-0 with a two-run home run to right center field.
The Pioneer offense in the next two innings combined for a total of 11 runs as team. During this stretch Glenville had a total of three home runs.
Zach Morris started off the home run surge with a grand slam to left field in the top of the fourth. Tre'Von Smith struck again with a solo homerun to left field. Once again, the Hitman struck for the last time in game one with his third homerun of the day, a grand slam in the top of the fifth.
Pitcher
Austin Corn was able to pick up his fifth win this season. Corn was able give the Pioneers five innings while only walking two batters. The long start from Corn will help the Pioneers with the conference tournament starting Thursday.
Game Two: Glenville 0, Concord 5
In game two the Pioneer bats were silenced by Concord's starting pitcher Dan Nicholls. Nicholls was able to pitch six innings striking out seven batters and only allowing four hits. Glenville early in the top of the fourth inning had a chance to bring home senior
Mitch Lohr. Lohr started the inning with a double for the Pioneers. Chris Davila grounded out to the shortstop but advanced Lohr to third. However, the next two batters where not able to score due to Concord's defensive plays in the infield and outfield. While the Pioneers used six pitchers in the second game, Glenville's bullpen was able to keep their pitch count low. For the Pioneers having a short turnaround, the low pitch count will help save some of their arms for the first game of the tournament.
