Lady Pioneers Drop Two on the First Day of Top Hat Classic

Elkins W.Va.- Glenville closed the first day of the Top Hat Classic with two non-conference defeats. The Lady Pioneers lost a close match to Seton Hill 2-3. Glenville State University's second match of the day ended in a 1-3 defeat to Elizabeth City State.

Game One

The Lady Pioneers first match of the day was a tough back-and-forth season opener against PSAC foe Seton Hill. The Griffins took the first set of the match 20-25.  Seton Hill was able to take an early 7-3 lead, which propelled the Griffins to a 14-7 lead halfway through the first set. However, a late surge by the Pioneers would bring the set back to within three points. Glenville would keep the first set within four points until Seton Hill rallied to score the last three points of the set.

In set two, the Pioneers were able to win the second set 25-10 thanks to the early 7-2 advantage that GSU had attained. The Pioneers carried the momentum from the beginning of the set and never looked back. Glenville would lead the entire second set squaring the match 1-1. 

The third and fourth sets of the match tested both squads. The Pioneers would take the third set 25-22 where both teams would battle throughout the set resulting in a total of five lead changes. In the fourth set, Seton Hill lead most of the match, but the Pioneers would keep the set within three points. Glenville would tie the match late 18-18 and take a one-point lead. Just like in the first set, the Griffins would pull away late and steal the set.

The match would go to a decisive fifth set where the Pioneers would strike first. However, Seton Hill would respond by taking an 11-3 lead. Glenville would continue to claw away at the deficit until Griffins pulled away taking the set 8-15

Freshman Rita Kelly led the match and team with 13 kills and 39 total attacks in her colligate debut. Sarah Granger produced a match and team-high of 36 assists along with 13 digs. Kataryzna Niderla in her match as a Pioneer finished with a match-high 4 aces. Niderla would also produce 9 kills and 5 digs for the Pioneers.

Game Two

In the Second match, the Pioneers would fall to Elizabeth City State 3-1. Elizabeth City State would take an early 5-1 lead in the first set. The Pioneers would answer the Vikings early run and tie the set 15-15. The set would stay within three points until late in the match where Elizabeth City State would win the set 25-21.

The second set of the match would be back-and-forth until the set would be tied 10-10. The Pioneers would take a four-point lead 14-10 creating some separation from the Vikings. Late in the second set, Elizabeth City would tie set at 24 all. Both teams would continue trading points until the final two points of the set where Glenville would take the second set 27-25.

After dropping the second set, Elizabeth City State would open the third set with a 15-2 lead. With the momentum from building an early lead, the Vikings would go on and win the set 25-11. In the final set, Glenville would take the lead until an attacking error tied the fourth set 11-11. After tying the set, Elizabeth City State would take the lead and win the final set 21-25. 

Helín Halden led the Pioneers with 17 digs, followed by Lindsay Winkler with 13. Junior Julia King finished the match with 21 assists. Freshman Middle Hitter Nalaina Funk finished the match with 7 kills.

What's Next

The Lady Pioneers will play their last two games of the Top Hat Classic. Glenville will face Lock Haven in the first game at 9:00 AM. The Bald Eagles were selected 8th in the eastern division of the PSAC Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll. Lock Haven returns Gabriela Fialova and Grace Hugar who tailed over 200 kills. The second opponent Glenville will face is Virginia State from the CIAA. Virginia State was selected 4th in the CIAA Preseason Poll. Kennedy Hodge who led the team in aces and Najlaa Williams who led the team in digs last season are key returners for the Trojans.
