Institute, W.Va. - Glenville State men's basketball team defeated the No. 13 Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State 91-77. The Pioneers had one of their best games from the free-throw line shooting 89.3%. Coach Caldwell's squad outrebounded West Virginia State 54-37 in the winning effort. Once again it would be a group effort for GSU with five players finishing in double figures.
Freddie Word got the Pioneers going in the opening minutes with a jumper. In the first five minutes of the contest, Glenville State was able to get going from three. Both Word and
Harrison Eghan connected from beyond the arc. Before the first under-five media timeout GSU took a nine-point lead 14-5.
Coming out of the timeout the Yellow Jackets were able to cut into Glenville's advantage. Anthony Pittman was able to spark West Virginia State's offense. Pittman was the leading scorer for WVSU with 25 points and he also grabbed eight rebounds. The Pioneers continued to be in a rhythm on offense. An 8-0 run by Glenville State propelled Coach Caldwell's squad to take a 17-point advantage.
In the last seven minutes of the first half, both squads started to trade buckets with neither gaining any advantage. With
Jay Scott hitting a three late GSU took their largest lead of the first 20 minutes 45-24. Before entering the half West Virginia State fought to cut Glenville's lead down to 16. A jumper by
Freddie Word at the buzzer put the Pioneers up 18.
Glenville State coming out of the half produced a dominant stretch to take a 25-point advantage.
Jacquez Yow got the run going with a layup inside the paint. The Pioneers went back and forth with the Yellow Jackets until the under-15 media timeout.
West Virginia State down the stretch tested Glenville State clawing at their lead. At the 8:06 mark, the Yellow Jackets made it a 13-point game taking advantage of the Pioneers' cold shooting. Before the final media timeout, Glenville State regained an 18-point lead 73-55.
WVSU made it uncomfortable for the Pioneers in the final two minutes. Jumper by Samier Kinsler made it an eight-point game but he would be fouled on the shot. Kinsler converted the and-one making it 77-70 with 1:33 left on the clock. However, Coach Caldwell's squad hit their free throws down the stretch to secure the win 91-77.
Freddie Word had a monster performance for Glenville producing a triple-double. The Fort. Myers, Fla. native had a team-high 22 points along with grabbing 13 rebounds and producing 10 assists. Junior Harison Eghan finished the contest with a double-double scoring 14 points and 14 rebounds.
