Pioneers Hit the Road to Face the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball team is back on the road facing the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus. Since the beginning of January, the Pioneers have had one of the best records in conference play going 6-1 in the last seven. Since the first meeting between the two squads back in December GSU has been on a roll in conference play. With a win, the Pioneers can continue to climb the standings.

A Look at Your Pioneers

In recent history, the matchup has not favored the Pioneers when playing at Rex Pyles Arena. Glenville State has lost the last two in Phillipi but they both have been decided by ten or fewer points. Yet, the Pioneers are 3-2 in the last five road contests. GSU in the first contest against game against the Battlers came out on top 118-77.

The Pioneers are coming off a close win against Concord. In last Saturday's game, GSU and Concord went back and forth until the very end. Glenville State was able to get to the rim and hit shots from beyond the arc. Freddie Word led the Pioneers in scoring with 21 points and grabbed ten rebounds to finish with a double-double.

As a team, Glenville State is one of the best rebounding teams in the conference and the nation. On average the Pioneers are grabbing 41.6 rebounds per game which is second in the MEC and 11th in all of Division II. In particular, GSU has been a great offensive-rebounding team. Coach Caldwell's squad on average is producing 14.1 offensive rebounds per game which is eighth in the nation.

A Look at Alderson Broaddus

Since AB's first matchup with the Pioneers, the Battlers have gone (4-6) picking up two conference wins. During this stretch, Alderson Broaddus defeated a familiar non-conference foe  Salem University. The Battlers almost upset the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State. AB had the lead at the half but in the last five minutes, West Virginia State was able to pull away. 

In the Battler's last time out they were able to defeat Bluefield St. 80-75. Jalen Collins had a team and season-high 20 points while producing 12 rebounds. Along with Collins, Coryon Rice finished the contest with a double-double. Alderson Broaddus also finished the game with 41 rebounds which was the second-highest total of the season. 

Alderson Broaddus is one most disciplined teams in the league at not following. Through 17 games the Battlers are only committing 15.6 fouls per game which is second in the conference. However, AB commits the second-most turnovers in the MEC. On average the Battlers are committing 16.5 turnovers per contest which has led to Alderson Broaddus losing the turnover battle throughout the 2022-23 campaign.
