Pioneers Five Game Winning Streak Comes to an End

Philippi, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball team's winning streak comes to an end against Alderson Broaddus. The Pioneers lost in overtime falling to the Battlers 74-72. While GSU outrebounded the Battlers 43-36, Glenville was not able to make their free throws down the stretch. The Pioneers finished the contest shooting 53.3% from the free-throw line.

Alderson Broaddus struck first with a layup by but Glenville's Jacquez Yow had the answer on the next possession. Before the first media timeout, Jordan Turbo Smith and Freddie Word also were able to get on the board. The Pioneers jumped out to a 9-4 lead with back-to-back jumpers.

Coming out of the first stoppage of the play Turbo Smith hit a three in transition putting Glenville up seven. Alderson Broaddus after Smith's three started to find their rhythm on offense. A 10-0 run by the Battlers gave them their first lead since the opening shot. Turbo once again hit a shot from beyond the arc making it 14-14 before the under-ten media timeout. 

Throughout the remainder of the first half, the Titusville, Fla. native was lights out for Glenville State. In the first half alone Turbo had 22 points while shooting an efficient 11-8 from the field. With 5:21 left the Pioneers took their largest advantage of the half. The Battlers Coryon Rice also had a solid first half producing 13 points keeping AB in striking distance of GSU. 

Jarmavious Jones in the waning minutes of the half hit a three to put the Pioneers up one. In the last 11 seconds, Glenville forced two turnovers and converted them into points. Heading into the half Glenville State had the lead 38-32.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Alderson Broaddus was able to tie the contest. Both squads continued to battle trading buckets with neither team taking control. Before the under-15 media timeout AB had a slight advantage 43-42.

Coming out of the stoppage of play the Pioneers went on a 12-0 run. De' Ante Petree and Trevor Chandler were key contributors during the streak scoring 10 of the 12 points. Glenville State's 12-point lead would be their largest of the contest.GSU remind around their double-digit advantage until the 5:18 mark.

After Freddie Word hit a jump shot inside the paint the Pioneers went cold for over five minutes. A free throw by Freddie Word ended GSU's cold spell. However, the Battlers took advantage of Glenville State's cold shooting taking the lead 65-64 with less than one minute left. Word's free throw in the final seconds sent Glenville to overtime.

During the first minutes of overtime, Coach Caldwell's Pioneers took the lead 71-65. After Jalen Knott hit a three to make it a one-possession game Jacquez Yow hit a free throw to give GSU a four-point advantage.  The Battlers Jalen Knott hit a jumper in the paint and Coryon hit a three late putting AB up by one. Glenville State had chances down the stretch but could not convert. 

Jordan Turbo Smith led the Pioneers in scoring with 26 points and produced six assists. Trevor Chandler provided 12 points off the bench for GSU while going 6-7 from the field. Junior Jacquez Yow finished the contest with a double-double producing 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
