BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Coach J.R. Dodson's Glenville Soccer Team got back on the winning track Sunday afternoon at The Bridge in Bridgeport, West Virginia. The Pioneers rolled to a convincing 7-0 road victory over the Salem Tigers, dominating throughout. Glenville outshot Salem 27-2 in the contest.
GSU established the lead for good at the 23:17 mark, as Graylin Floyd drilled a shot into the lower left quadrant of the goal with Merel Smets delivering the assist. Just moments later, it was Smets who peppered the lower left area of the goal, scoring off an assist from Summer McShane-Cale at 36:00. On Glenville's next possession down the field, the Pioneers were awarded a penalty kick. Again it was Smets, driving home the PK in the 39th minute, pushing the GSU advantage to 3-0 at the half.
Early in the second half, Estrada Fernandez scored, finishing an assist from Aitana Viejo at 62:54. After the ice was broken, goals came in rapid fire succession; Smets completed her hat trick, finding the net on an unassisted goal at 65:18, and less than two minutes later, Irene Robles scored at 66:55 on another assist from the sharp-passing Viejo. Moments later, Viejo powered a home a goal of her own at 72:54.
The Final Stats
Statistically, the shots on goal advantage was 18-2, and Glenville had all seven corner kicks. 21 total players got in the contest for Dodson. Abigal Morales went all 90 minutes, recording the shutout and snaring two saves.
Glenville improves to 3-4-2 with the win, while Salem falls to 0-6-1.
