GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Women's Soccer team set a new single-season win record with today's 2-0 victory over Davis & Elkins at Morris Stadium. The Pioneers had 20 shots, holding the Senators to just four.
Merel Smets added to her season total in goals with her 11th of the year on a penalty kick at the 25th minute. Nine minutes later, Aitana Viejo netted her fitfth goal of the season on a beautiful header that was assisted on Irene Robles' corner kick. The Pioneers took their 2-0 advantage into the locker room.
Glenville State changed the script in this game's edition of keep away, wasting as much time as they could off the clock. However, GSU had a few chances to increase the score but a pair of nice saves by the Senators' goalie kept it at 2-0 game. The Pioneer defense was also able to maintain the 2-0 lead for the remainder of the game, securing their fifth win of the season.
The Final Stats
Merel Smets and Aitana Viejo both found the back of the net for the Pioneers. Irene Robles recorded an assist as well. Smets and Hannah Hill fired five shots off and Tessa Cinotti had four shots. Mikayla Brown recorded two saves in the win.
Ciara Casamento led the team in shots with two. Gabriela Acevedo gave up two goals but corralled nine saves.
