Volleyball Puts UC to the Test in Loss at Home

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Volleyball team fell to the University of Charleston 3-1 tonight inside the Waco Center. The Golden Eagles collected 62 kills compared to the Pioneers' 52 en route to the win.

UC was able to create separation in the first set after being neck and neck with the Pioneers to start out. That changed when GSU scored eight unanswered points to take a 21-18 lead. Glenville managed to hold on, taking the first set 25-23.

The Golden Eagles once again created a solid lead in the second set, however they didn't let this one slip away. After falling behind 10-7 to GSU, Charleston scored 18 of the last 23 points of the set to win 25-15, knotting the game up at one.

Glenville State fell behind big to start the third set, trailing 10-3 at one point. The Pioneers climbed back into the game, cutting the Golden Eagle lead to one at 18-17 following a pair of Rita Kelly kills. UC took back control, taking the set 25-19.

Three of the first four points of the fourth set were due to errors by UC, giving GSU an early 4-1 advantage. The set became a nail bitter as neither team could gain a sizable lead until Charleston score seven-straight to go up 21-15. Glenville didn't budge, going on their own run to take a 23-22 lead. Down 26-25, UC rallied to score three-straight to win the set 28-26 and the match 3-1.

Three Pioneers finished with double-digit kills, led by Rita Kelly's 15. Katarzyna Niderla added 11 and Sydney Goodrich finished with 10. Sarah Grainger mustered 39 assists while also having 14 digs. Lindsay Winkler also had 14 digs in the loss.

UC featured four players with 13 or more kills but it was Pia Selke who led the charge with 15. Maria Hernandez (23 assists) and Suzan Agterberg (21) shared setter duties all night, combining for 44 assists. Chloe Fortner and Riley Hoff both had 17 digs for the Golden Eagles.
