Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | GSU Sports Information

Pioneers Use Second Half Surge to Defeat Yellow Jackets

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Men's Basketball team picked up their first win of the season tonight in MEC action against West Virginia State 84-75. Both teams shot around 36% from the field but the Pioneers were able to connect on eight more threes to help lead them to victory.

It was a slow start to the game as it was just 14-10 Pioneers after the under 10 media timeout. After knotting the game up at 19 apiece, WVSU finished off the first half on a 10-5 run to take a four-point lead (29-25) into halftime.

A lot of back-and-forth buckets by both squads is how the second half began with GSU taking the lead at 40-39 on a Turbo Smith three-pointer. Following the under 10 media timeout, WVSU went up by four once again but quick baskets by the Pioneers tied the game right back up at 52.

The Yellow Jackets grew their biggest lead of the game at 64-58, however the Pioneers would have their largest run of the game at 17-4 to grab a seven-point lead with three minutes left in the game. That run sealed the deal for Glenville, bagging up their first win of the year and starting MEC play 1-0.

The Final Stats
Jordan Turbo Smith had a game-high 25 points, eight assists and six rebounds to lead the Pioneers. Pikeville transfer Devin Collins got hot in the second half, connecting on four three-pointers and finishing the game with 18 points. Jaelin Johnson added 13 points and a team high seven rebounds.

Anthony Pittman led the Yellow Jackets with 17 points but was forced into seven turnovers. Bunky Brown aided with 14 points and nine rebounds while Nate Mims added 12 points and nine rebounds also.

Up Next For The Pioneers
The Pioneers travel to Charleston on Tuesday for a meeting with the Golden Eagles at 7:30 p.m.
