Preview: Pioneers Ready for Matchups with Charleston & Malone this Week

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Men's Basketball will be back in action tomorrow (Nov. 21) against Charleston on the road and will square off with Malone in a non-conference bout on Saturday (Nov. 25). The Pioneers were swept by the Golden Eagles last season.

THE OPPONENTS 
CHARLESTON 

The Golden Eagles enter (2-1, 1-0 MEC) after opening up MEC play with an 81-74 win at Concord on Saturday.  

Dwaine Osborne is in his 11th season leading the Golden Eagles. In his first decade at UC, Osborne has led Charleston to 191 wins, four MEC Championship game appearances and won MEC Coach of the year three times. Prior to leading UC back to prominence, he had four-year stints as HC at Texas – Permian Basin and Glenville State. 

CJ Meredith leads UC in scoring at 17.0 PPG and is shooting 53.3% from the field. Eddie Colbert III (14.5 PPG), DeAirius Barker (14.3 PPG) and Tyler Eberhart (11.0 PPG) are all averaging double figures as well. Colbert and Barker are the most active on the boards with both pulling in 5.0 RPG. West Virginia State transfer Dwaine Jones is dishing out 5.3 APG to lead the team. 

MALONE 
The Pioneers come in (4-0), previously defeating Central State 80-73 on Saturday. MU has won their four games by an average of just 6.3 points. Malone will meet with Penn State DuBois tomorrow before meeting with Glenville State on Saturday. 

Charlie Wallrapp is in his first season leading Malone. Wallrapp came to Malone from Northern Michigan where he spent three seasons as the lead assistant. While he was with the Wildcats, he helped lead NMU to its first GLIAC Championship in 23 years and secured an NCAA Tournament win as well. Wallrapp also has coaching stops at Clarke University and Kansas Wesleyan. 

Simon Blair is averaging 23.0 PPG, 3.5 APG, 3.3 RPG and shooting 53.8% from the field to lead the Pioneers. Sufyan Elkannan has been another offensive weapon, pouring in 18.0 PPG, 5.0 RPG and 2.0 APG. Aaron Badibo is averaging a near double-double with 10.3 PPG and 9.3 RPG.  

THE PIONEERS 
GLENVILLE STATE 

The Pioneers enter the new week (1-2, 1-0 MEC), picking up their first win of the season on Saturday against West Virginia State 84-75. 

Dominiq Penn continues to lead the Pioneers in scoring, averaging 19.3 PPG. After only playing 12.0 minutes per game (MPG) in the first two games of the year, Jordan Turbo Smith went off for 25 points against WVSU to raise his average to 13.5 PPG, good enough for second-best on the team. James Franklin (10.7 PPG), Devin Collins (10.3 PPG) and Jay Scott (10.3 PPG) are aiding the offensive attack. Franklin leads the rebounding efforts, pulling down 5.7 RPG while Smith is grabbing 5.0 RPG. Smith's 4.5 APG and Antoine Boyd Jr's 4.0 APG are bests through the first three games.
