Pioneers Secure Much Needed MEC Victory over WVWC

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Coach Kiara Perkins' Glenville State Volleyball Team picked up a solid league victory on Friday evening at the Waco Center, defeating West Virginia Wesleyan in straight sets 25-19, 26-24, 25-16. They were able to dispatch the Bobcats by making some key plays down the stretch of the fist two sets, then racing out to a commanding lead early in the final frame.

In the first set, it was a steady diet of the Pioneers pushing to leads of three to four points, then the Bobcats reeling them back in. Fortunately , GSU materialized a strong late 7-2 surge in the set to close it out 25-19. In the second set, Glenville also controlled play for most of the frame in similar fashion, but another of the WVWC comebacks eventually squared the match at 24-24. But a pair of Helin Halden kills closed the issue at 26-24.

In the final stanza, Glenville sprinted out fast; grabbing leads of 8-2 and 11-4. The Pioneers were able to ride this early momentum and end the night with a 25-16 third set victory.

The Final Stats
Offensively, Rita Kelly and Katarzyna Niderla led the Pioneers in kills with 10 and eight respectively. Setter Sarah Grainger recorded team-highs with 24 assists and six service aces. Sydney Goodrich also delivered a pair of service aces on her own.

Defensively, Niderla registered five blocks at the net, followed by Ross with four and Kelly three. Goodrich posted a team-high 11 digs, and was complemented by Lindsay Winkler with 10 and Grainger seven.

Glenville improves to 11-16 overall with the win, and 4-9 in the MEC. Wesleyan falls to 6-8 overall, and 1-12 in the league.
