Lady Pioneer Softball Starts the 2023 Season at the Sue Morris Sports Complex

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State Softball kickoff the 2023 campaign this weekend hosting the MEC/PSAC Classic at the Sue Morris Sports Complex. Head Coach Sara Scoone enters her third season and returns some strong contributors. This weekend the Lady Pioneers will face Clarion University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Seron Hill, and Slippery Rock. 

A look at Your Lady Pioneers

Glenville State last season went (17-27) overall and (13-18) in conference play. At last year's MEC/PSAC Classic the Lady Pioneers were able to pick up three wins defeating Clarion, Mercyhurst, and Lock Haven. During the 2022 season, GSU had a solid home record but struggled on the road.

GSU's single-season strikeout record holder Holly Brehm returns for her senior season. The Lady Pioneers also return their leading hitter Ashton Palmer. Palmer had a batting average of .322 and an on-base percentage of .716.

  • 24: Addison Aguiniga led the Lady Pioneers in RBI's last season
  • 209: Holly Brehm record over 200 strikeouts during the 2022 campaign
  • 0: Kaelyn Stenger went the entire season without committing an error in the outfield. 
A look at the Golden Eagles

Clarion slit their season-opening series with USC Aiken. In CU's first contest of the season, they were able to drive in 13 runs with 11 coming in the third. Desi Allen would hit the Golden Eagles' only home run of the game. 

While Clarion has only played two games this season they have PSAC's highest team batting average hitting.345. However, the Golden Eagles sit around the middle of the pack when it comes to ERA. CU has also given up the most home runs in their conference.

  • .800: Sophomore Desi Allen leads the Golden Eagles in batting average this season
  • 8: Clarion's bullpen has produced eight strikeouts this season.
  • 4: Senior Carissa Giordano has been one of the Golden Eagles' leading hitters during the 2023 season.

A look at the Crimson Hawks 

IUP is set to start the 2023 season this Friday against fellow MEC Conference member Wheeling University. Last season the Crimson Hawks posted a (17-21) overall record. Freshman stud Sara Tailford returns for her sophomore season.

The Crimson Hawks had the 12th-best batting average in the PSAC last season hitting .269 as a team. However, IUP ranked towards the bottom of the conference for ERA. Coach Bellaud's bullpen had a team ERA of 4.52.

  • .341: Freshman Sara Tailford returns with the team's highest batting average.
  • 49: The Crimson Hawks strikeout leader Bella Bucy returns for her Junior Season.
  • 100: IUP produced the second-fewest strikeouts in the PSAC during the 2022 season.  

A look at the Griffins

Similarly to Clarion, Seton Hill has already played two games this season. The Griffins were able to take the mid-week series against Wheeling 7-0 and 12-3. In the second game, SHU had an explosive fifth inning scoring seven runs.

The Griffins currently sit third in the PSAC for batting average hitting .326 as a team. Setton Hill's bullpen has also been solid early on this season. Through two games the Griffins have the second-lowest ERA in their conference. 

SHU by the Numbers
  • .800: Sophomore Grace Paredes has SHU's highest batting average.
  • 9: Lauren Dellett in her season debut posted nine strikeouts in seven innings. 
  • 2.30: Freshman Abby Shearman leads the Griffins in on-base percentage this season. 

A look at the Rock

Slipper Rock is set to start its season this Friday against Fairmont State University. Glenville in the series' recent history has struggled against Slipper Rock. The Rock went (3-1) against the Lady Pioneers.

Last season Slippery Rock ranked right around the middle of the pack in ERA in the PSAC. However, the Rock was one of the worst-hitting teams in their conference with a team batting average of .241.  SHU did only hit into one double play last season.

  • .317: Erin Garder returns with the highest batting average on the team.
  • 255: The Rock was able to produce the sixth-most strikeouts in the PSAC last season.
  • 14: Junior Mackenzie Freeman led Slipper Rock in home runs during the 2022 campaign.
