Lady Pioneer Softball Starts MEC Play on the Road at West Virginia State and Charleston

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Lady Pioneer Softball starts conference play against the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State and the University of Charleston Golden Eagles. Glenville is coming off back-to-back wins sweeping a two-game series with Carlow. Last Season the Yellow Jackets were swept by the Yellow Jackets and split the series with the Golden Eagles.

A Look at the Lady Pioneers

After returning from the spring games Glenville has won three out of their last four contest. During this stretch, the bats have been hot for the Lady Pioneers averaging 5.3 runs per game. So far this season GSU sits seventh in the conference for batting average. Katelyn Richardson, Shelby McDaniels, and Addison Aguiniga have batted over .300 to start the season.

The Lady Pioneers have had one of the top bullpens in the Mountain East Conference. GSU currently sits third in team ERA with a 2.85. Coach Sara Scoone's squad has posted two shutouts coming against Clarion and Mercyhurst. Holly Brehm once again has had a dominant start to the 2023 campaign. In nine appearances the senior has struck out 66 batters while only allowing 30 hits.

A Look at the Yellow Jackets

West Virginia State has already started conference play. The Yellow Jackets opened up with Concord University and swept the two-game series. WVSU so far has been the best-hitting team in the conference. In four games this season the Yellow Jackets have scored ten or more runs. Emma Pauley, Emma Ruth, and Kasey Murphy are all hitting .400 or better.

The Yellow Jackets bullpen sits ninth in the MEC for team ERA with a 5.68. West Virginia State has produced the fewest strikeouts so far this season. WVSU's go-to starter Kasey Murphy has the lowest ERA on the team and the most wins this season.

A Look at the Golden Eagles

Since starting the season with three straight losses the University of Charleston has rattled off three straight wins. The Golden Eagles also sit towards the top of the conference in batting average. In their win over Virginia Union UC produced 25 runs in the opening game of the doubleheader. Hannah Rose has been the Golden Eagles' top hitter this season with a .462 batting average and recording 12 hits.

Along with being able to produce runs Charleston's bullpen has also been lights out. Through the early portion of the 2023 season, UC sits first in the conference for ERA. The Golden Eagles Addison Mass in six appearances has not given up an earned run this season.
