GSU Softball Starts MEC Play 1-1 Splitting With West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. - Glenville State's Softball team split the opening conference series with the Yellow Jackets. Throughout both games of the doubleheader, the Lady Pioneers were able to keep one of the Mountain East Conference's top offenses in check. While Senior Holly Brehm did not pick up the win in game one, she was able to close out game two and secure her first save of the season. 

Game One  Glenville 3 West Virginia State 5

West Virginia State jumped out to an early 3-0 in the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, the Yellow Jackets scored on a sacrifice fly to center field. During WVSU's next time up to the plate scored two more runs on sacrifices. 

Halfway through the contest the Lady Pioneers started to chip away at the Yellow Jackets' advantage. On a passed ball Emma McLean advanced to second and Addison Aguninga scored. Glenville was able to take advantage of another error made by WVSU scoring on a dropped fly ball. 

During the final three innings of game one, the bats for West Virginia State got hot once more. In the fifth, the Yellow Jackets jumped back out to a three-run lead with an RBI double and RBI single. The Lady Pioneers produced one more run in the sixth with Ashton Palmer's single to left field. 

Holly Brehm had another solid start for Glenville. She went six innings while striking out nine and only walking one batter.  Both Ashton Palmer and Emma McLean produced three hits for the Lady Pioneers.

Game Two Glenville 6 West Virginia State 4

While West Virginia State got on the board first, Glenville took control of the contest in the top of the second inning. Stevens with a double down the left-field line drove in two runs for the Lady Pioneers. Kylie Goodman scored the final run of the inning on a sacrifice bunt making it 3-1. 

Coach Scoone's squad doubled their lead with a massive sixth inning. While Shelby Mcdaniels reached on a fielding error Courtney Saylor was able to score the first run of the inning. With a single up-the-line left field line and up the middle, the Lady Pioneers built a five-run advantage. The Yellow Jackets started to scrape at the Glenville advantage but GSU's bullpen was able to hold on. 

Freshman Kylie Burdick picked up her fourth win of the 2023 campaign. Burdick threw six and a third innings for the Lady Pioneers. While she gave up ten hits, she battled to only allow two earned runs. Holly Brehm picked up the save closing out the final two outs.
