GSU Softball Prepares For Weekend Trip Against Frostburg and Fairmont State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Coming off a midweek split with Concord University, the lady Pioneers hit the road once more. Glenville State starts the trip with the Bobcats of Frostburg State and closes the weekend on Saturday with Fairmont State University. Coach Scoone's squad still sits firmly in the postseason picture.

A Look at Your Lady Pioneers 

GSU currently sits third in the Mountain East Conference South Division and only three games back of West Virginia Wesleyan. The Lady Pioneers this season have been able to produce runs with their speed. Glenville has produced the third-fewest doubles in the conference but has the fifth most hits since the start of league play. The majority of the Lady Pioneers hits have come from Katelyn Richardson, Kaelyn Stenger, and Shelby McDaniels. 

Glenville with Holly Brehm and Kylie Burdick produce a one-two punch out of the bullpen. In MEC contests Burdick has a sub-three ERA and a record of 7-1. Brehm a senior, has the second most strikeouts in conference play with 94. With a total of 154 strikeouts during the 2023 campaign, Holly is on pace to have another stellar season.

  • 10: With ten wins Freshman Kylie Burdick sits tied for tenth in all-time wins. 
  • 8: In eight out of the last ten contents Kaelyn Stenger has at least recorded one hit. 
  • 2: Emma McLean in the second game against Concord hit her second career home run. 
  • 4: In the last four series Shelby Mcdaniels has had at least one RBI.

A Look at the Bobcats

Entering Friday's doubleheader Frostburg sits third in the North Division. The Bobcats are coached by Bill Vasko who enters his fourth season with the program. Last season Frostburg State fell just short of the MEC championship game. During the 2023 campaign, Coach Vasko's quad has been one of the better-hitting teams with a batting average of .311. Frostburg has had success with the long ball hitting 25 home runs.

The Bobcats have also had one of the better bullpens in the league. While Frostburg has the fourth-lowest ERA, teams have a .283 batting average. Jamie Roberts and Sydney Theobald have been FSU's go-to arms this season. Both have started 16 games and have combined for 20 complete games.

  • .436: Jamie Roberts has the third-best batting average in the MEC.
  • 5: The Bobcats Brianna Powell has hit the ninth most home runs in the league. 
  • 81: Along with being a top hitter Roberts has the sixth most strikeouts in the conference.
  • 7: In Ashlynn Routzahn's 48 at-bats she has hit a team-high seven home runs. 

A Look at the Falcons

Fairmont State enters the weekend second in the North Division. The Falcons last season won the MEC Tournament. First Team All-MEC selection Emily Riggs returns along with two-sport star Katy Darnell. Riggs this season has a batting average of .377 and leads the team in home runs. Darnell has been the Falcons' leading hitter with an average of .411 registering 23 hits in 19 games. 

Fairmont's bullpen this season has given up the fifth most hits in the conference. However, the Falcons have a sub-four ERA with five shutouts this season. Freshman Emma Gates has been Fairmont State's go-to arm making 18 starts. Gates during the 2023 campaign has produced 11 wins while recording 38 strikeouts.

  • 11: Emma Gates is fourth in the conference for wins. 
  • .408: Hannah Workman has the fourth-best batting average in the MEC
  • 19: Fairmont State has hit the third most home runs in the league
  • 61: The Falcons have stolen the third most bases in the conference.
