Lady Pioneer Softball Makes it Six Straight With West Virginia State Sweep

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Softball has now won six consecutive contests with Sunday's sweep of West Virginia State. The Lady Pioneers now have a two-game lead against the Yellow Jackets in the standings and sit third in the South Division. GSU would have to pull away late in both contests.

Game One Glenville State 6 West Virginia State 2

West Virginia State got the board early in the top of the first inning. After starting the inning with a walk WVSU's Emma Ruth scored on a passed ball and a throwing error by GSU.

The Lady Pioneers started to put pressure on the Yellow Jackets in the bottom of the fourth. Katelyn Richardson started the frame for GSU with a single to right field. Glenville would go on to load the bases with a double down the line by Makenna Negley and Addison Aguiniga battling for a walk. However, West Virginia State got out of the jam getting the final out of the inning.

During the bottom of the sixth Glenville State started to take control of the game. With Aguiniga picking up her third walk of the day, she tied it up 1-1 while keeping the bases loaded. Freshman Kylee Goodman hit her first career homer run at the next at-bat. Goodman's shot to left field cleared the basses growing the Lady Pioneers' advantage to four. Before the end of the inning, the Lady Pioneers scored once more with a Katelyn Richardson single.

While the Yellow Jackets scored a run in the final frame, Glenville held on to win 6-2. Holly Brehm picked up her seventh win of the season finishing the contest with six strikeouts and only giving up one hit.

Game Two Glenville State 6 West Virginia State 4

In game two of the doubleheader, the Lady Pioneers scored first. At the bottom of the second inning, Addison Aguiniga's infield single gave GSU the early advantage. West Virginia State would start to shift the momentum in their favor halfway through the contest.

During the fourth inning, the Yellow Jackets got on the board in a hurry. Before the Lady Pioneers could record an out the game was tied 1-1. While the West Virginia State only had four hits in the inning, WVSU's speed caused problems for Glenville. With their speed, the Yellow Jackets were able to score three more runs.

The Lady Pioneers quickly responded in the fifth. Glenville started the inning with a single up the middle by Kaelyn Steenger. With three consecutive singles, GSU loaded the bases and started to dig into the Yellow Jackets' lead. Emma McLean cleared the basses with a triple putting the Pioneers up 5-4. Before the end of the frame, Glenville scored another run on a bunt taking a two-run advantage.

Kylie Burdick was able to secure the win for GSU. After a difficult fourth frame, she produced three solid innings for the Lady Pioneers earning her seventh win of the 2023 campaign.
