Lady Pioneer Softball Takes a Game From WVWC for the First Time Since 2021

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - Glenville State Softball concluded the 2023 regular season against the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan. The Lady Pioneers were able to take a game from WVWC for the first time since the 2021 season. Coming into this afternoon GSU has lost the last seven in a row. 

Game One Glenville State 2 West Virginia Wesleyan 1 

Game one from the jump would be a pitcher's dual. Freshman Kylie Burdick went against a veteran MEC pitcher Hannah Hudson. Glenville got on the board first at the top of the second. The Lady Pioneers started off the second frame with a single to left field by Kaelyn Stenger. Addison Aguiniga followed this up with a single of her own that socred Stenger. With an error by  Bobcats Aguiniga advanced to third. Later on in the inning, Haylee Stevens drove in another run making it 2-0. 

West Virginia Wesleyan in the bottom half of the frame cut GSU's advantage in half. Glenville got the first out of the inning with a strikeout. The Bobcats during the next at-bat hit a solo home run. However, the Lady Pioneers defense bounced back getting the final two outs. 

Kylie Burdick and GSU's defense throughout the remainder of game one held WVWC scoreless. The Bobcats would have a runner on third in the fifth but the Lady Pioneers were able to get out of the inning. Kylie Burdick picked up her 12th win of the season. Ashton Palmer finished game one a perfect 3-3. Makenna Negley also finished the contest with multiple hits. 

Game Two Glenville State 0 West Virginia Wesleyan 6

The Lady Pioneers and Bobcats would both be scoreless through the first two innings. At the bottom of the third frame, West Virginia Wesleyan's offense caught fire. In the third alone WVWC produced six runs taking the lead 6-0. Five of  Wesleyan's runs were earned with doubles and singles doing most of the damage to GSU. 

Glenville in the fourth and fifth frames had runners in scoring position. The Lady Pioneers could not get a run across in either of these innings. GSU had another strong chance in the final frame, but the Bobcats ended the contest with a putout to third on a fielder's choice. 

Both Katelyn Richardson and Kaelyn Stenger finished the game with a team-high two hits. Ashton Palmer along with Haylee Stevens also recorded a hot. GSU returns to action next Friday at the 2023 Mountain East Conference Softball Championships.
