Glenville State Softball Close-Out Home Stretch With West Liberty and Wheeling University

Glenville, W.Va. - Glenville State softball continues Mountain East Conference play against West Liberty and Wheeling University.  The Lady Pioneers will be closing out a 14-game home stretch against the Cardinals of Wheeling. Saturday's doubleheader will also be a senior night for the GSU softball program.

A Look at Your Lady Pioneers

After starting conference play (1-5) GSU has picked up six more conference wins. Throughout the season Glenvile's bullpen has been lights out. Senior Holly Brehmhas the second-best ERA in the MEC with a 1.28. Brehm a native of Mullens, W.Va. leads the conference in strikeouts.

The bats for the Lady Pioneers have started to turn around during MEC play. Senior Katelyn Richardson leads Glenville in batting average this season and on-base percentage. Shelby Mcdaniles is close behind hitting .284 while producing 23 hits. As a team, GSU has shown solid plate discipline throughout the 2023 campaign. The Lady Pioneers have gotten on base 85 times this season due to walks.

  • 31: Glenville State has committed the second-fewest errors in the conference. 
  • 3: Katelyn Richarson leads the Lady Pioneers in home runs. 
  • 7: Freshman Kylie Burdick is one win away from tying the program record for the most wins by a freshman
  • 5: Kaelyn Stenger leads Glenville in doubles this season. 

A Look at the Hilltoppers

West Liberty was able to take one game against the South Division leaders the University of Charleston. Since then the Hilltoppers have gone (3-3) sweeping Wheeling, splitting with Fairmont State, and falling to Frostburg. Similarly to the Lady Pioneers WLU's bats have struggled at points throughout the season. Riley Conkle has been the Hilltopper's best hitter so far with a .344 average.

West Liberty's bullpen has two pitchers with a sub-four ERA. Madison Angus this season leads the Hilltoppers in wins with four. Angus in her eight starts has struck out nine while only allowing one home run. As a unit, WLU's bullpen has the eighth lowest in the MEC.

  • 218: The Hilltoppers have produced the sixth most hits in the MEC.
  • 17: West Liberty's bullpen has allowed the third most home runs.
  • 79: The Hilltoppers have committed the most errors in the conference.
  • 4: Riley Conkle ranks ninth in the league for home runs. 

A Look at the Cardinals 

Wheeling enters Saturday's doubleheader on an eight-game losing streak. During this stretch, the Cardinals have been shut out on three separate occasions. Sara Pelegreen enters her fourth season under the helm. While as head coach Pelegreen lead the Cardinals to their first-ever MEC Tournament Championship game. 

So far this season the Cardinals have sat around average in the conference for team batting average. Through 31 games Wheeling has produced 205 hits while driving in 91 runs. Coach Pelegreen's squad bullpen sits eight in the MEC for Team ERA. The Cardinals' go-to arm this season has been Randi Holder.
