Glenville State Baseball Drops Final Home Doubleheader to Concord University

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Baseball ended their final home games of the 2023 season against the Mountain Lions of Concord University. GSU honored seniors Ryan Rodriguez, Matthew Mangum, Nick Moore, Fabian Escalante, Christian Davila, Spencer Blackburn, Chase Swain, Jacob Hoyt, Brandon Layne, Levi Fox, and Josh Cline. The Pioneers fell in both contests to the Mountain Lions.

Game One  Glenville State 4  Concord 11

While Concord got on the board in game one first, the Pioneers were able to tie it up in the bottom half of the inning. With two out Fabian Escalante gave Glenville their first hit of the afternoon with a double to right field. Later on in the nine Carlos De Jesus hit a single to the outfield to score Escanlante from second.

Throughout the next two frames, Concord's bats caught fire swinging the momentum in their favor. While only one run crossed in the second, three more came at the top of the third making it 5-1. CU's offense continued to produce later on as well. With another three-run frame, the Mountain Lions built a seven-run advantage.

Heading into the bottom half of the seventh the Pioneers found themselves trailing 11-2. Fabian Escalante provided a spark for GSU with a single to center field. On Senior Day Jacob Hoyt hit his first career homer to cutting Concord's advantage to seven. However, Glenville ran out of time with a groundout ending game one.

Game Two Glenville State 1 Concord 5

The second half of today's doubleheader was a battle that would be decided in extra innings. This time the Pioneers got on the board first in the second inning. Spencer Blackburn with a single up the middle gave GSU their first base runner of the frame. Ryan Rodriguez followed up Blackburn's hit with a single up to the outfield moving Specer to third. While Matthew Mangum was out on a groundout, a run would score making 1-0.

Both squads would be held scoreless until the sixth inning. The Mountain Lions only had one hit in the sixth but took advantage of two GSU errors to tie it up. With both sides all square 1-1 after seven innings, we were headed into extras.

In the top half of the eighth, the Mountain Lion's bats did damage once more. Before GSU could record an out the bases would be loaded. Concord cleared the basses with a grand slam down the right field line making it 5-1. The Pioneer's bats were held silent in the bottom half of the frame.
