Lady Pioneers Fall to the University of Charleston in Extra Innings

TROUTVILLE, Va. - Glenville State Softball's postseason run came to an end this afternoon falling to the Golden Eagles of Charleston 4-3. The Lady Pioneers found themselves trailing for most of the contest. However, the GSU clawed its way back and eventually tied the contest. With runners on third and second the University of Charleston walked it off in the bottom of the eighth.

With an early solo home run by the Golden Eagles, the Lady Pioneers trailed 1-0. Offensively UC continued to have success putting two more runs up in the second. Senior Holly Brehm would be called out of the bullpen to stop the damage. Brehm struck out the last batter to get out of the frame.

At the bottom of the third, the Mullens, W.Va. native made history. Holly picked up her 200th strikeout of the season becoming the first Glenville pitcher to have back-to-back 200 strikeout seasons. During the fourth frame, GSU was able to get on the board digging into UC's three-run advantage. Shelby Mcdaniels gave the Lady Pioneers a spark with a single down the left field line. Glenville took advantage of an error made by UC to advance runners to first and second. With singles by Addison Aguiniga and Kylee Goodman, GSU only trailed by one.

After Chraleson struck out the first Lady Pioneer in the seventh, Haylee Stevens doubled to left center. The tying run advanced to third on a passed ball. During the next at-bat, Ashton Palmer reached first on a fielder's choice but Stevens would score on a throwing error by the Golden Eagles. The Lady Pioneers could not bring another run across before a double play ended the frame.

With two outs the Golden Eagles had runners on second and third. Charleston walked off the contest taking advantage of an error by Glenville. While the 2023 campaign comes to an end GSU had many firsts this season.
