INSTITUTE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Women's Soccer team fell to West Virginia State tonight 2-1 on the road to open Mountain East Conference play. The Pioneers recorded a season-high 16 shots with seven shots on goal while the Yellow Jackets recorded 10 shots.
1st Half
Both teams were looking to start conference play off on a good note, attacking from the start as WVSU got their first shot off just two minutes in and the Pioneers' Hannah Hill had a shot at the 5th minute. The first save of the game came at the 14-minute mark on a shot from Tessa Cinotti. Three minutes later, West Virginia State's Esther Dhiramo got the Yellow Jackets on the board first, assisted by teammate Laura Galindo.
GSU continued their offensive attack after allowing the goal, having six shots toward the goal for the remainder of the first half but couldn't find the back of the net. At the half, GSU trailed 1-0.
2nd Half
The Pioneers wasted no time tying the game up in the 2nd Half, netting a goal at the 48-minute mark with Mackenzie Hendricks scoring for GSU. The Yellow Jackets had a fast response for Glenville State, scoring their second goal of the game at the 56th minute after missing a penalty kick at the 53rd minute.
Down a goal, GSU consistently tried to tie but the Yellow Jacket defense stayed strong. Goalkeeper Laura Galindo made sure to keep the WVSU lead, racking up three saves in the second half. The Pioneers couldn't find their way to a tie, falling 2-1.
The Final Stats
Mackenzie Hendricks had the only goal for the Pioneers on four shots. Graylin Floyd also got four shots off and Merel Smets finished with three shots. Abigail Morales had two saves in the loss.
For WVSU, Esther Dhiramo and Sandra Linares each had a goal. Karissa Vela had an assist and Lauren Galindo had a total of six saves.
