ELKINS, W.Va. - The Glenville State Women's Soccer team tied with the Senators of Davis & Elkins 1-1 this evening at Nuttall Stadium in Elkins, W.Va. The Pioneers and Senators both had double-digit shots with GSU firing 16 and D&E getting 10 off.
1st Half
Glenville State's Hannah Hill had the first shot on goal of the game but the Senators were able to stop the shot. D&E wasn't able to stop the next shot as freshman Aitana Viejo netted the first goal of the game with a header after the Pioneers were awarded a corner kick. GSU continued their aggressive offensive attack, pushing towards another first half goal.
The Senators mustered together a strong defense for the remainder of the half, not allowing another goal for the remainder of the half even though the Pioneers fired off eight more shots. Davis & Elkins had five shots, not getting them near the net.
2nd Half
Just two minutes into the new half, Davis & Elkins' Jimena Guerrero knotted the score at one with a goal in the upper lefthand corner. The intensity picked up for the rest of the game as both teams looked for the game-leading goal. AitanaViejo attempted to put GSU back up at the 57th minute with a shot to the left side of the goal, being saved by the Senators' goalie.
The two squads traded blows with shots on goal, going back and forth but ultimately neither goalkeeper would budge. Both teams had opportunities in the closing minutes, however the strong defense displayed stopped any offensive push, ending the game in a 1-1 tie.
The Final Stats
Aitana Viejo scored the goal for the Pioneers and also tied for the team lead in shots with four. Merel Smets finished with four shots and three shots on goal. Abigail Morales had three saves.
Jimena Guerrero had the goal for the Senators, unassisted. Goalkeeper Gabriela Acevedo had herself a night, gathering nine saves in the tie.
