BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Glenville State's Volleyball squad produced a productive Friday at the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat Invitational, playing to a spilt in their two matches. Earlier in the day, the Pioneers of head coach KiaraPerkins rolled to a 25-16, 25-9, 25-16 win over Central State of Ohio. In the evening contest, GSU fell to Seton Hill 15-25, 21-25, 15-25.
Match One
Glenville utilized a strong late surge in the First Set to go up on CSU, then carried that momentum into a dominant Second Set, taking that frame 25-9. Coach Perkins' squad was able to close the issue in the Third Set, ending the match with a tidy 25-16 score. Katarzyna Niderla and Rita Kelly each produced seven kills, with Sydney Goodrich five. Niderlaand Kelly also led in blocks with seven and three respectively.
Setter Sarah Grainger posted team highs with 20 assists and eight digs. She was complemented defensively by Goodrich and Lindsay Winkler with seven digs each.
Match Two
Seton Hill captured the evening contest in straight sets, but the Pioneers were competitive throughout. After falling to the Griffins 15-25 in the First Set, GSU pushed the Griffins to the very end through the Second Set, but came up just short 21-25. While the final stanza was close through the early and middle stages, SHU materialized a strong late surge to close the victory.
Niderla and Kelly again led at the net posting six kills each, followed by Nalaina Funk with four. Niderla also tallied a team-high two blocks. Grainger tallied 21 assists against SHU and also delivered a pair of service aces. Morgan Stephenson led the defense with seven digs, followed by Winkler with six and Goodrich with five.
Up Next For The Pioneers
Glenville is back in action on Saturday, playing a pair of non-conference matches in the tourney. At 9:00 AM they face off with the University of Indianapolis, and at 2:00, they close weekend action against Bowie State.
