Volleyball Ends Bobcat Invitational 2-2 with Saturday Split

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Coach Kiara Perkins' Glenville State Volleyball team closed their play in the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat Invitational on Saturday. The Pioneers split their two matches on Saturday; losing their first match to the University of Indianapolis in straight sets and coming back with a straight set victory over Bowie State. They closed their weekend in Buckhannon 2-2 in four matches.

Match One
Glenville opened the day with a 9:00 AM tilt against a powerful University of Indianapolis squad, and battled them hard throughout. Unfortunately for GSU, the efficient U Of Indy team was efficient in winning the necessary points for a 25-13, 25-19, 25-16 decision.

Katarzyma Niderla led the Pioneers at the net with six kills and seven blocks. She was complemented in kills by Sydney Goodrich with five, and Nalaina Funk and Sarah Mazzaferro with four each. Setter Sarah Grainger led the GSU defense with 12 digs and also tallied a team-high 20 assists. Bryanne Tustin was also solid with 10 digs.

Match Two
Glenville bounced back with a lot of energy to close the tournament. They jumped out to an early lead and took the first set against Bowie 25-13. Bowie rebounded in the second set and two squads battled throughout, but in the end, GSU prevailed 25-23. Riding the momentum of the hard-fought second set win, the Pioneers efficiently took the final frame 25-18 to close the victory.

Grainger registered an amazing seven service aces in the contest and also set for 20 assists. Niderla produced a team-high 10 kills, followed by Goodrich with seven and Mallory Ross five. Ross also posted a team-high three blocks. Winkler again led on the defensive end with 14 digs. Goodrich added eight and Grainger six.
